Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ha, ate at the Golden Coral on Wed. I didn't get sick, but won't eat there again. It was better the first time around years ago. Wanted to try it as is just reopened.

I've never eaten at Golden Corral but I'm terrified of buffets. Any restaurant that keeps its food out all day in the open air is scary. Sorry to hear you got sick though. I've only had an obvious food-born illness once, from an Applebees shrimp caesar salad - not sure what I was thinking ordering that but we don't eat there anymore regardless. Still, it was NASTY.

I went to close up everyone and smelled blood. Inspection revealed my handsome white hackled Sherman now had red hackles and a dripping comb. I bundled him up and handed him off to DH and son who blood stopped him. They believe it is all from his comb. I put him in the basement and will give him a good look over after he has scabbed up tonight. I can guess who caused it but didn't see any clues in the near dark.

On the good news....20 eggs! They are finally picking up, but I now have 12 dozen in the fridge.

I have 8 on the counter... That was after a French toast breakfast and 14 to the birds hardboiled and peeled. Might be the funniest thing to see... Frizzled serena carrying away a hard boiled egg from a NH. Lol

hope your roo is alright.

Yo-Yo weather is forecast for the coming week which makes it difficult to get excited about doing much more than sitting at the table drinking coffee and occasionally looking outside to confirm at it is a lousy as forecasted.
I often feel that individuals who make their living as prognosticators are
prone to hyperbole, yet one oft spoke word for the coming week's weather does seem quite accurate..........miserable.

quiet on here today! Looks like it'll be warmer today!

I stayed home today to feed the goat, my mom will come over the rest of the week to feed him for me. Right now he's snoozing in my lap. We're debating on de-horning...I love horns, and I hate the thought of putting him through the process... But, I don't want him to destroy the fence either!

Farmer, your goat is lovely! I like the name your friend picked for her!

Silly, I know you have experience with goats, but male animals intended for breeding use have more normal behavior and are less likely to have behavioral issues if raised with other animals of their species. Encouraging breeding males to be "friendly" with people leads to issues once they reach sexual maturity. Having them live in an environment with other goats lets them lead a more normal, and probably happier life, as they feel more confident and comfortable around their animal companions.

X 2!

I personally am getting my newest buckling from a farm that dam raises all the kids. The kids are socialized with humans, though, so they are friendly. But they know they are goats. I just don't want a buck who waggles his tongue at ME rather than the does he is supposed to be servicing. My current buck was also a dam raised laddie, and while he is super friendly, he knows not to make smelly goat love to my leg.

As for disbudding, it is a personal choice, but one you will need to make very soon. Doelings can have more time before their horn buds need to be done, but bucks, they need to be done much sooner or the buds get too big for burning. I personally am not a fan of horns. An accident between a horned goat and a not horned goat resulted in the death of the goat without horns. Also, I've been whacked with horns too, usually on accident. They may turn to itch themselves when I am near them and smack my leg. Also, when I had to pick up a horned goat one time, he threw his head back in protest, and nearly gored my eye. He only knocked my glasses off and scratched my temple. though.

Question for you all...

We normally don't use a heat lamp in the coop, so I don't know if this idea would work... We are going to be gone for one night (Approximately 24 hours gone). If it were warmer out, I wouldn't be worried about the chickens - their food and water would last. But with the cold, the water will freeze. I was thinking of giving them a heat lamp in the coop to keep their water from freezing - just while we are gone. What do you think? Would that work?
:)
