Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey Michiganders,

I haven't been here in quite a while but thought I'd pop in to ask this question. I checked the "hatching eggs for sale" threads but wonder if this is a better place to find what I am looking for. I know you will point me in the right direction. I'm interested in purchasing some local(outside of Oakland Co) hatching eggs sometime this spring-maybe April or May. If possible, I'd prefer to pick them up rather than having them shipped. Do you all just list your hatching eggs in the "for sale" section or do you offer them up here? The kids are in 4-H and we are looking for some new blood in the coop. We like Araucana/Americana, Marans, Frizzles, Cochins, etc., more of the fancy types rather than the usual egg laying types. We have 35 birds now, probably 28 different breeds out of that 35. So, should I check the "for sale" section or check back here when I am ready to buy? Thanks everyone.

Raz, I loved your "Sun" egg. I had a surprize when I gathered eggs yesterday afternoon. There was this huge blue soft shell egg in the box. I gently lifted it out and carried it in the house to weigh. It was 110 grams but it felt like something hard was inside. I broke open the soft shell in a bowl and there was a fully developed 57 gram egg blue egg inside. The 57 gram eggs was in perfect condition. Way to go Mabelline! (Now, do I count this as one or two eggs in my egg count????

Whew, eventful night, woke up at 3:30 to DW screaming for me... Thats always scary as of our 5 dogs we have two that will occasionally have a tift and it can be ugly so we usually separate them unless we are right there... Well I wake up and one of the "bad" ones was still in bed with me so I knew we were safe there. I got to the kitchen and she had my step daughters shepherd mix and he had his mouth bloody and his paws. He looked like he was holding his breath too. Well we wrestled him to the ground and pried open his mouth to see what was going on... now by this time he decided to start breathing again but when he would he would start to try to scratch his mouth with his front paws... Well the dork got into the trash and ate a chicken bone and had it wedged sideways across the roof of his mouth. By this time my step daughter woke up to see what the noise was about... We ran two leashes through his mouth, one top and one bottom to hold it open, dw swept in and got the bone out very easily... Whew! He is fine now, he cleaned himself up while we all got our showers again... mind you during the event he managed to knock over the water dish... not just a bowl but one of those with the 5 gallon jug... Yeah loads of fun. All is good now. I swear the joys of having pets!

Hi, wow, 5 years on BYC! Congratulations. There are quite a few people in lower Michigan that breed something a little different - I am sure that some of them will contact you. I do not see many Michigan eggs in the buy/sell section. Good luck!

Sheesh. Can't a guy sleep in for one day?

I have heard about an egg within an egg but I never saw one before. That is pretty amazing.

I'm happy the dog is OK. Mine fell halfway in the fish pond the other day. It was a good thing I was out there when it happened.

My hens have decided to lay in a new spot. I found 12 eggs in a corner under the work bench. It is the opposite end of where they usually lay. I was getting 2-3 per day in the old spot. I even saw them sitting there. So now I'm thinking that they planned this. "Hey, when he comes out, you go sit on that nest and trick him. We'll hide our eggs over here."

Hey gang! We are from Freesoil Michigan. Last year was our first year with chickens. Purchased them right out of Tractor Supplies handy dandy brochure! At that time we thought Buff orpington was a breed. We had little knowledge that Buff was only a color and Orpington was the breed. Ha ha.
Lets just say we have gotten a bit more educated since then. Keep in mind we are still learning.
Since I have almost exhausted our efforts to find available new stock of a select chosen breed and color, we are considering hatching some eggs instead. What brand or brands of incubators are you guys using? How difficult and sucessful is it?

I'm here, not that it's important. Nothing to report on really. The chickens are picking up their laying a bit. 3-4 eggs a day now, up from 2-3. Erm... eggs are in their fourth day of incubation. Everything's steady and uneventful. Nice freezing fog this morning, beautiful sunshine.

Almost hit a skunk the other night, that was fun. It was snowing heavily and I swerved to miss it, missed it, and then realized I probably shouldn't have swerved given that the roads were slick and I had the entire family in the car. Plus, the little bugger is hanging around the barn now, cheesing off the cats and generally stinking up the place. Not sure if that's newsworthy but it's all I got.
glad you and your family is ok.. and glad your getting more eggs.

I am ready for the storm, bring it on..

I processed 5 old hens last week, brined them for 3 to 4 day.. i took two days to roast 2 different batches, then in evening after cooled i separate meat from bones, and strain broth.. i have 2 big pots of broth to skim fat off and freeze in containers..
I have some of the cooked chicken in crockpot with homemade sulsa, some fresh frozen jelapenos, and other spices, and going to make chicken burritos for supper..

I cant believe how much meat there was. i even have extra cooked meat to vacuum pack and freeze..

I hope i dont affend anyone by posting i did this..

these hens were old and not laying anymore. if they were still in production i would of kept them alive,

dd and i are planning on sterilizing the incubator tonight.. i have read bleach water works good, what does everyone else do to clean their incubator

tjbeckman glad your dog is ok, how scary.

I think most of us on here appreciate home grown fresh chicken! We can most of our meats, and when I open a can of chicken, I save the juices and freeze it, once I get enough, I use that to add to my slow cooker with a chicken... a little extra flavor goes along way!

I've been really disappointed in the snow storms.. If we're gonna have them lets have them! Certainly nothing compared to '78 when we had that humdinger of a snow storm! I wouldn't mind getting snowed in for 3-4 days! Or the rest of this week, I don't like the way this one is going!
