Hi does anyone use leg bands? If so what type do you suggest?
we have both the flat numbered ones, and the round spiral ones. I like the flat ones for temporary (easier to get on and off) but the spiral ones stay a little cleaner I think. I found the rounded ones to be harder to get off when they got tight. You can also use small zip ties. I'll probably band everyone in the fall for age-groups so I know how old they are.
My husband is thinking about the add a motor for our coop. Does any one use this ? If so do you like it, any problems?
I like ours a lot. The only bad thing is that you have to put it on a timer, and our power tends to flicker in every storm we got and we have to re-set the timer a lot in the fall with all the storms. (We got the one that's not 'supposed' to be used for chicken doors, and put a counter-weight on it.)
oh my goodness SO CUTE!

dascountry, do you remove the pine needles in the spring, or do they break down in the sand?
Most break down...can hardly see many now...the girls are busy digging to china in the middle of the coop. Great BIG hole

In the spring the top layer of sand comes out and goes in the garden area. We have so much sand we just add more.

Hi everyone, my husband and I are new at chickens. Our dog Sweetie doesn't quite know what to make of them, LOL We are in process of converting a shed
hope Sweetie doesn't decide to dive in, she looks like she would like to

Good morning MI.

I had a good night at my grandma's last night. My aunt & uncle were there as usual, and my nephew and his wife. My sister, other nephew, her boyfriend, and his son also came for dinner. They haven't been to Thursday dinner in quite a while and it made for a full house. Loved watching my nephews and kids all play various games of cards, dice, and chess in the livingroom. My aunt made some potatoes casserole stuff with mushrooms, onion, ham, & BACON in it. Yum...

Loving all the chick pics too!
we used to gather at my moms every sunday, play cards or some other game, Miss those times. My daughter comes up with her girls and our son often stops over, some times his boys will come I enjoy seeing them all

At some point you may want to turn it into a pot luck though that is a lot of people for your Aunt to cook for and she may not want to ask for help....I had a friend that would do that but she often wished the others would bring dishes to pass. Just wouldn't say anything to them...

I use the zip strips they come in lots of colors and just cut off the end. but leg bands with ## would be a plus
My ducks have started laying eggs again! Yummy for baking with!

I took the Mama and the kids out to visit the rest of the herd! And in the sunlight, their gorgeous blue eyes really stand out! Especially on the little boy!

He is a very nice looking boy!

My mini 'donkey' haha.

I started using leg bands on a few of my chicks this spring to keep the birds I hatched and the ones I purchased separate. I've thought for quite a while that it would be better than depending on my memory to sort out which birds were how old etc. It's especially more difficult cause all my hens look the same. So, I basically just started using them this year. I'll sort by breeder and year for colors. I'm just using (loose) colored zip ties and I'll change the band as they grow.

Hope everyone has a fun but safe ST. Patty's Day!! And a great weekend too!
