As promised, a picture of our new goat kid. Eliza is an 8 week old Alpine. She's slowly warming up to me, yells at me whenever I walk into the barn.

Tonight I think DH and I are going to finally assemble the nest boxes. We're building a frame to fit 5 gal buckets into. I'm eager to get these chickies outside if the weather would ever warm up. They're 5 weeks old and getting so big. Plus I need to get the little brooder out and cleaned because my eggs in the bator should be hatching next week. So much to do :)

I have a EE that started limping during the summer...on and off. I would soak her feet and she would feel better for awhile and then start limping again. Could not find any thing wrong. Now, she can't put weight on that foot. Will have to go thru the link and see if I'm missing something or something I can do for her. She's in the heated garage brooder enjoying all the treats. She even started laying again. I put rubber mats down so she wouldn't slide when she walks on her haunches.

No sun here.

Have a good one.......

Her middle toe is turning black now....I'm pretty sure she'll lose it soon; anyone know if she'll be able to make it w/out 2 toes? I'm hoping that she's limping now because the middle toe where it will separate, is sore and when her toe drops off....she'll feel better....thoughts appreciated

We've got 4 inch roosts, have 70-80 hens...no one else has this issue.....no idea what happened!
Is she allowed on the roost? or does she roost by a wall or vent where it could be colder? Could she have been unknowingly left outside over night?
poor circulation?
old injury?

sounds like frost bite still..

Just tossing ideas.

I'm sure she'd survive just fine as long as she doesn't develop an infection, or if what ever is causing her issue doesn't continue to spread... then I'd suggest removing her from the rest of the birds and possibly culling.

Last summer I had a bird almost lose toes cause he had gotten a tiny piece of string wrapped around them, was hard to see with feathered feet. but I got it off and he was ok. I had a few birds lose toes, but that was due to a predator biting them off, yeah nice huh! Haven't had that issue in a while though thank goodness!

Poor baby....I think I'll have Steve cut a mat for her too - She is putting weight on and has been laying like a trooper every other day...but her preference is not to put weight on it...Hopefull when the second toe drops off she'll be able to get around better....will keep everyone posted!

Thanks for the input.....if it is frostbite, I wonder why in the world no one else is having a problem.....there's always a possibility that she did not get in the coop before the door closed and she had to spend the night outside on a cold one....who knows? - thanks

I'm looking for Standard Buff Brahmas as well as Golden Laced Wyandotte chicks....anyone??
Please PM me - and we are in Dewitt, just north of Lansing

As well, does someone know of a grainery that carries DE? I think I remember someone telling me that Charlotte does???
