Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi everyone. Been a long time since I've posted on this thread.

I have three chicks that I was wondering if anyone wants? Two are Silied Olde English Game Bantams and one is a purebred silkie (partridge I believe). We are hatching out some duck eggs and I threw those eggs in with them because I had bator room :) Nahhhh, I'm not addicted!

Anyway, pics below were taken this morning of the three babies. If you want them just let me know, and they are yours! We are in Lapeer so you'd need to be able to make it here or near here anyway. We are going to the 4H Auction in Lapeer tomorrow late morning and I could bring them there if you were ready for them.

Hope everyone is staying dry the best they can! ICK!!!! We have a nice flowing river in our chicken pen :/

I'm trying to figure out how sand is cheaper. I don't get it. If I get a yard of sand (and, I'd need more like 2 yards) and get it delivered, it's going to cost me about $200, depending on where I order it from. It's a wash to haul it myself because then they charge you by weight, and I'd have to make 4 trips to get enough, so once you add up the extra cost and the gas to get it, they could have just brought it for you and saved all the trouble.

I've put 8 bags of shavings in my coops, and try to keep it about 8in deep. That's $40, and I can use it to mulch my flowers with when I change it.

Maybe sand is just really expensive here?

I have to agree about the sand. Even if it were cheaper, it's so heavy and hard to haul (especially for those of us who don't have trucks and can't lift too much) that I'd still opt for the lighter shavings. Of course, my coop is a lot larger than some, like 9' x 13' so I need a lot of bedding. I also enjoy composting the stuff (though the guy who farms our field took my compost pile and spread it on said field last week without asking me

). But everyone's got their own circumstances and solutions, you know.

I just wanted to carry over those pictures so they didn't get lost because my pointless drivel moved onto the next page. That's a cute bird there, that bottom pic. Wish I could take more but I'm giving away and selling my extras too.

Quote: Thank you! That's a purebred silkie chick. My 14 year old son started a project last year with silkies and this year is going to also move in to Golden Seabrights. He's a great kid. I'm blessed for sure. Secretly I think since he's growing up he does less and less with mom and this is his way to still bond with mommy... gotta take advantage of that!!!

Well... actually, I would love to get some fresh eggs. I really miss my chickens and the fresh eggs. Just about kills me to have to buy some at the store. Do you ever get up around Newaygo??

No, I don't but I'm going to take a bunch to a food pantry next week AND stop by Daron's place so maybe I'll just have to make a bit of detour on the "way home" if no one closer beats me to it.

sorry about the coon attack, always a fear
Going through my seeds today and deciding on what I'm going to plant this afternoon. I like to wintersow my flowers in milkjugs, and while I'm getting a late start on it this year (I like to get them done in Jan or Feb) there's still plenty of time! I'm probably going to pick up some cell packs and try starting some veggies here too. With this late of a spring certain, they'll need a little extra time indoors to grow.
are you planting inside or outside??I have tomatoes, marigolds, and peppers started inside. Hopping it is warm enough next week to put them out on the porch to toughen up a little
I would think that the hard cement floor would be very hard on their feet as they are jumping down from their roosts. Might cause some injuries.

Good Morning! Gloomy, but at least it's not raining!
My thoughts also!!
Love the baby chicks, they sure are pretty

We are using sand in our brooder this year. At first, I LOVED it. Less dust (but still a little dust), cheaper (we just needed a bag of play sand from Lowes, and that $4 purchase has lasted 6 weeks), and it really seemed to keep the smell down. But 5 weeks after near daily poop scooping, and occasional complete sifting (with a very fine fabric), it started to really smell.
I had considered switching our 3' x 4' coop floor to sand, but now that I know that it really has a limited time, I won't be doing that.
If it's outside, and there's no hard floor under it you just hose it down now and then to "clean" it and it keeps the dust and smell down.

Our yard is nothing but sand really, so i got lucky and didn't have to import any. I love it! Drains good, and all you gotta do is hose it down to get rid of stuff.
