Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi Jamie, glad to hear you are hanging in there - hopefully morning sickness will abate soon.

I agree that lighting is probably the issue, combined with regrowing feathers (takes a lot of protein for that). How many hours are they getting now?

I make sure that the light is on for 8 hours in the coop. I am kicking myself for not getting rid of the roosters earlier. For silkies they were really brutal.. one of my poor girls lost her tail feathers completely and one was bleeding. These roos didn't even have their spurs yet. :/

Aww babies and puppies!

I have a couple pictures. I have to say I have never had birds like these Orloffs. They don't care what it is like outside, it's where they want to be. Big birds but super friendly and I think they are beautiful. Anyway....they were out enjoying the snow and sun.

I have emailed all the people from Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development this morning, and got one of them emailed me this. I don't quite get it-

Thank you for contacting the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development. In their meeting today, the Commission referred the 2013 Generally Accepted Agriculture and Management Practices (GAAMP) for Site Selection and Odor Control for New and Expanding Livestock Facilities back to the respective Task Force Committee. The 2012 Site Selection GAAMP will remain in effect until any future recommendations by the Task Force Committee are approved by the Commission.

Does it mean that they are not changing the law??? :fl

babigyrl! Congrats on the impending chaos!

Start stocking up on those diaper ASAP! If you aren't going to nurse (Which will save a lot of money on formula and bottles if you do), I loved the nubi bottles for my boys. I got the no drip bottles. I went to work right away, so my mom was watching over night, and she'd fall asleep with the baby in her arms, so the no drips were a must. I nursed and pumped for both mine. Would recommend that to everyone.

Also... get several premie diapers and clothes to start... Just in case.. Jace was so tiny that the NB clothes didn't fit and my friend had to run to the store to buy preemie clothing for me. LOL.

Some times, they come pregnant from a rescue...

Sounds like they sent it back to commitee for more review - sometimes that is how they kill these bills, because no one wants to change it but they are unwilling to just say no.

After New Year I will add a light in my coop, so that they get a total of 13-14 hours a day of light - it comes on around 4 am.

Random picture spam again today...
I don't think Leila got this fluffy last winter. Of course she was broody as hello... This is the hen I got from Kim at C.S.

And her daughter, Soledad... Soledad dug herself a hole in the neighbors front yard and was busy trying to free herself. I was kinda laughing when I took this picture...

And Soledad after I got her out of the hole... She was cold, so she'd snuggled under the heat lamp in the garage

That's Skeeter in the background. She's been a heat hog since coming out of the broody box. I was going to put her back in the coop with everyone else, but she's lost weight being broody, and she won't go in the coop until she fattens herself back up... Oh... another garage baby...

But wait, there are more pictures!
The seriously odd couple... Loralie the faverolle hen and Fritz the Jerk

And who wants to see a nice pic of the Jerk. It took forever to get a good one. He never stays still... Duh.. Jerk!

He treats his lady love so nicely. LOL. He ignores Ekta though... Jerk. LOL. I am thinking she's happy not being molested by Fibber though. LOL

AND NOW! the fattest hen I have, Eldee... Eldee got named that because when she was young and dumb, she went over the fence to visit the dog yard. The dogs ripped out her tail, the neighbor Earlene rescued her... SO, L.D.= lucky dummy. LOL

And... now... A really weird silkie cross... I am not sure who Roger got before he died, but this is the result... it is a faverolle x brahma or sussex hen as mama...

And it is a boy... bummer...

My lovely Florus.... I mean... it wouldn't be complete with out a Florus Picture!

And, I never posted a completed covered run pic...
Here ya go... LOL

And from the side with the door... Notice the for sale signs? I picked those up free and used them as walls for the summer coop conversion. LOL.

I use the gas to get them stoned. HAHAHA. Actually it is empty. I had parked the lawn mower in the side yard... Ran out of gas is more like it, and had ot put it in the back shed... I forgot the empty gas can there.

Well, at least your chickens aren't chicken of the snow! LOL. Looks like they are having fun!

In case any of you don't know about it, A now nine year old boy died of cancer in November and wanted people to pay it forward for Christmas. Here is more info: https://www.facebook.com/#!/KeepOnTruck ... en?fref=ts
It has now reached all around the U.S. and even Canada and Mexico. Tonight they had a lantern lighting because his birthday was today. They called it Sending a Birthday Party to Heaven: https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/1671 ... 7/?fref=ts
If you read this, be ready for tears. I don't cry much, but this made me blubber like a baby.
