When I asked our township about the local laws, they said 10 chickens and when I asked about a rooster she said she did not see anything against it. I know there is the right to farm act (is that what it is called?) but my SO works for the government. I do not think he would be willing to fight to keep more (not that it is an issue right now). My one neighbor has 4 ducks, so I do not think there will be to much issues from her. I was thinking of putting the coop closer to her yard (once I can get pics on the computer I will post a picture to get thoughts).

As to your question, if your local ordinance already allows poultry, I would just say "thank you" and be done with it. Are they likely to come do a beak count?

The state law, commonly referred to as MRTFA uses the GAAMPs to manage farm operations and while there is no size limit, they tend to favour large commercial operations. Many smaller operations have successfully used the courts to keep their flocks. This has been going on for years and there is a lot of history.

I'm thinking about getting two more hens this spring and was wondering if anyone knew which breed lays the olive colored eggs? I have 3 Americanaus and a RIR. Any suggestions on a breed if I decide to get two more this spring? Thanks

I just realized mypetchickens.com has a 15 chick minimum so that won't work. Does anybody breed chicks or know of anybody that is willing to sell a couple hen chicks in like April? Thanks

MPC is a drop-shipper, so you order from them, and then THEY go to the various hatcheries to see who can fill the order, and the order is shipped from the hatchery (Ideal, McMurray, Meyer, etc). They're a middle-man. Tractor Supply should have chicks in April. I don't know what their minimum is though.

Olive egg layers are a cross between a dark brown egg layer (marans and welsummers are usually one half) and a blue or green egg layer (EEs, Ameraucanas, Araucanas, Legbars, etc). So there is no "breed" that lays olive eggs. They're all mixes.





So I injected my hen with around 1/2cc of Tylan 50. Do you think I should go ahead and put Tylan in the waterer in the coop she was in as a preventative measure? This is seriously ridiculous. At the rate we're going, we're going to have more dead chickens than live chickens in our first year.

Hi everyone, I went ahead and put old lady down today.. she was still acting the same.. and I am glad i did it from the results of opening her up and checking her out. she was like 50% more emeciated from yesturday.. I took pictures for all to see.. hope i dont gross anyone out or offend anyone with my pics.. she was miserable and I feel good about helping her pass on.. Its never easy, but i did it real humane and she went fast..I held her thru her passing.. and said a prayer.. Now she is up there with my dad and i know he will take good care of her.. she wasnt going to get better.. Thank you everyone for all your advice thru the last day or so..



This is her breast bone, when i felt it this morning i knew then to put her down.. I could grab that with my thumb and finger.. I guess that really helped me decide this am.. because it didnt feel like it yesturday when i check it..



I am thinking this is her reproductive system.. I was suspecting to see this since she has always had a hard stomach.. that big one was atleast 4 inches big.. i wish i would of measured it..
it all looked like hard boiled yolk..




check this liver out.. I did not look healthy.. wasnt firm.. Kinda was like mushy and stretchy.. definately not healthy..


RIP old lady.. No more suffering for you..

looks like a severe infection in her reproductive area... the yolks kinda hang out and are quite visible when you vivisect a bird. Liver damage probably a result of what ever was going on in her body... poor girl, you did the right thing.

OK so like I said, I have been loosing birds for 2 yrs. in 2011, took some to the vet, he thought strongyles and cocci , treated for those, birds kept dying,Thought, maybe just to week????
2012 it started again, with new chicks,......older birds from hatchery vaccinated for Mareks and cocci, are not getting sick, just new chicks........first chick to get sick this year showed classic sign of Mareks, paralysis, 1 leg front 1 leg back, after doing some more research and talking to a BYC-er, I ordered Mareks vac. gave to all birds. still having birds die. symptoms, look puffy, sick, pale comb, very thin, pick them up and it is a shock to see how thin they get in a short time. It could still be Mareks, as they were all infected before they were vaccinated.

not knowing finely got to be to much so I E-mailed Dr. M Fulton, from MSU...He suggested bringing in 3 birds to see if there is more then 1 thing going on. It could take up to 2 weeks to get the results, ,,,cost $170, for all 3 birds. a ridiculous amt. of $$ but I had to know, so I decided to bite the bullet,
will let you know what is going on when I hear.

Crap crap crap. Just went out to check on everyone and my middle son's white rock is sick. Crackly breathing, sighing (think of a quiet crow call with every exhale), and she let me just pick her right up.....which isn't like her. I've got her in the house in a pet carrier, water with ACV in it, I'm making her some oatmeal and am going to put a bit of yogurt in it. Probably give her some wazine too. Ugh. This REALLY sucks. Anyone else have any suggestions??? It almost sounds like something is stuck in her windpipe.

Anyway, HI! I am pretty new. I read more than I talk at this point. I do not have any chickens yet, but I plan on building a coop this spring and get some chickens. We live in Muskegon. I am interested in chickens for eggs this year and maybe next year we will think about for meat. I also thought about quail for eggs. Yes, I know they are small, but they are perfect sized for little ones (we have 4). Plus I have some quail egg molds. We live on .8 acres just outside of Muskegon (we are in Egelston township).
