Just got info that my chicks are ready to be picked up!!! I ordered from a semi local hatchery in Capac. Now I get to go pick out exactly what I want :) I am really excited now!!! Now I have to make the final decision on what I want to buy....

I think I might want a couple Jerseys, and some EE, maybe even a couple more Wyandottes...oh the choices?!?!?!

I went ahead and used the food color bottle. It worked okay. Probably would have been better if I had worked the dropper but my 13yr old son was doing it while I caught and held them. No one received more than their dosage but there may have been some that soaked into feathers. His hands weren't as steady as mine and he held the bottle too far from the skin so that the drop didn't always land where he thought it would. Done properly, I think it would have been a great substitution.
nice to have it done,,, you know you can use ivermectin pour on in the water also
That sounds so exciting.. I am new to chickens since sept, and i think one of my hens is broody.. I am thinking of going and buying a dozen of eggs from a farmer for $1.50 pencil date on them, and see if she can hatch them.. but then i am not sure if its to early.. never thought i would want chicks.. but you all are making me want them.. and my daughter would be so excited..
make sure you post pictures after you pick them up..
if you have them in the house a lot of people are using sand seems much less dusty don't forget to ask if their rooster is active
Thought this was interesting from Community Chickens.....

The Life Changing Device was invented. In Rich’s words:

that is soo cool, some people are so creative!!!!

You must be getting them from Jamie. She just posted on FB what she has available. I'm kind of tempted to get a few JGs.
I need to ponder this a bit more.

I did not know that. At what amounts?

So I went out of my way today to make the chickens a dust bath because it's so damp and their run is flooded and muddy, even with the straw down. I got a tub and put a mixture of DE and play sand in it, hauled it out there, open the coop door and found four chickens sprawled in front of the door, dust bathing in the shavings, in only dry spot in their coop. Oy! Needless to say, they weren't even remotely interested in getting up to check out the one I made them.

I guess, on the plus side, perhaps I am somewhat in-tune with their pea brains.

I did that for my chickens before, a tub of wood ash, and some DE mixed in it, it took a few days, but they found what it was for. But I kept finding black droppings allover the coop, and that alarmed me a bit, 'til I found out that they were eating some of the charcoal from the tub of wood ash. :gig They looked a bit grayish after taking their baths, and the plus side is that there are no parasites after they took their baths!

Another day spent in chicken court. There was a TV crew there and I thought they were from Court TV, it was actually Comedy Central.
OK, not really. There were cameras, but this comedy of errors continues...
We got the written opinion from the case that was tried in Wayne just minutes before our hearing. That was a win for chicken keepers (Pete's case).

The judge said that Pete's case was in a different city so probably it isn't the same thing. However, the judge is keying on 2 items, having less than 10 acres and how much product needs to be sold to be considered "commercial". (The RTFA makes no distinction on either and prior case law clearly states that it doesn't matter.)

The prosecutor is keying on the 2013 proposed GAAMPs (which were tabled) and what the 2014 GAAMPs "may" say. How can you build a case on what may be in the future???

The prosecution was embarrassed in the Wayne case and wants to save face, so they are trying to beat up on Mike because he does not have an attorney. However, his case and mine are virtually the same. Heck, we even live on the same street.

Five weeks ago, they told Mike that they would follow my case and see what happens. Two weeks ago, they quasi- combined our cases. Today they separated them with me going back in 2 weeks and Mike the week after. I'm not entirely sure if that is the start of the trial or an evidentiary hearing.

You need a score card to keep track of the silliness events that have transpired over the last year.
Is it beer-thirty yet?

OK I had all this typed out and my lap top crashed so I will have to give my MSU report later, guys need help moving wood,

I use 4cc per gallon Ivermectin pour on, I thought I read some place you should use 9cc per gal, so if my 4 is wrong some on please correct.

I use peat, sand, wood ash and DE in my dust bath, they will use the bedding on the floor but it is not as effective as it doesn't get to the skin the way they need to.

Do you guys know if I would have to purchase from Jamie right now? I want to get 2 more hens but I don't really have a place to keep them warm until around April...
Maybe we could work out a deal...

Say you buy a couple for you and an equal number for me at the same time. I'll raise them here until you can keep them. Just split the cost of food.

We could have them this weekend. <nudge, nudge, wink, wink>
