Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So is anyone tapping maple trees yet? A buddy on mine in New Hampshire is boiling his sap this weekend.
I think I would like to try it.
my brother in law makes maple syrup and already has boiled 200gal of sap down enough so he doesn't have to worry about it freezing. so, if you want to tap a few trees you'd best get started! the first sap makes the sweetest syrup!

I was on ilovebacon.com and saw that some people in a different state had their sugar shack raided by the police. They were boiling sap but the authorities thought it was a meth lab. I found it fun ny and sad at the same time.

Zeke, I don't know what post you are referring to but, when someone says they are trying to 'break a broody," they mean they don't want her trying to hatch eggs, they want her to go back and keep laying new ones. When a hen goes broody she wants to hatch chicks, some are so broody minded they will even sit on rocks, or golf balls or even nothing at all - they just stay put and sometimes don't want to leave to eat/drink or poop. Others steal eggs and have them in a nest and try hatching them.

Some people don't want the hen to be broody so they 'break her,' they usually keep her confined somewhere without a nest or bedding,in a somewhat elevated cage, so cool air flows under her. After a couple days or so, she usually forgets she wants to hatch eggs and can go back to the coop with other chickens.

Glad you're feeling better Kimmie
The benefit of a really small hatch is getting to know them all right away.

AWWW
I would consider silkies from my group, but they'd so not meet SOP. LOL

I mean... LOOK!

She's pretty. Great feathering on her toes, huge crest and beard... only she is PINK SKINNED!
She's really cute though.
Sitting here this morning and thinking about yesterday's experience with the cable company. I'm reminded of the commercial of several years ago where the teacher tells a kid that he can't have any new crayons that they are only for new students. I've been with Comcast for many years and recently when I asked why my bill was so high when I am constantly see their ads for much cheaper rates I was told that I was receiving the very best rate possible. So after stewing on it for a while I changed to U-verse for $50 per month less and for a much better lineup. When I called yesterday to cancel my Comcast service they immediately offered to cut my bill by $60 and improve the line up. Why couldn't they do that in the first place?
Charter does that to me all the time. They decide to raise my bill, so I call and start cancelling services and this last time ended up cheaper than I was before they raised it. I think they do if figuring that most people won't question it and will just pay the extra. Its really irritating.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes and great tips!

We ended up going with 5 of the red pullets (potential breeds: Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Isa Brown, and Buff Orpington), 5 Pullets (potential breeds: Isa Brown, Rhode Island Red, Black Sex Link, and Barred Rock), and 2 Black Sex Links. We got them from TSC, and so far they are doing great! A bunch of little poopers for sure though! lol I'm making a bigger area for them today. We got the small water station and feeding station for now. But dang if those little turds don't flip their bedding into the watering station the second I clean it out! lol
I have pictures but I don't think I'm "allowed" to post them yet cause I'm still a newbie. lol
We are super excited to see what they all turn into as they grow. My two oldest children who no longer live at home, have come over 2 times just to see them since we've gotten them. lol

Okay...so my question of the day is this (and I can hear you all laughing already, but it's a legit question!

): Several of the chicks have poo stuck to their little behinds..and I mean..a good size gob..lol Do I need to do something for them?
hu.gif
Or will they take care of it. lol I don't want them to have problems going.

Thanks again.. and you can stop laughing now

I have been told that giving the chicks cold water to drink is one of the causes of poppy butt. If you put some olive oil on their butt after you get it cleaned, it will a lot easier to clean next time.
I finally went and picked up my kid this morning.

I had put down a deposit for him a few weeks ago. I

him!!! He is 6 weeks old, and still on bottle. I named him Laubach. He is 1/8 Nubian, and 7/8 Boer. He will be my breeding buck for my doe, and my neighbor want to use him for her does too, so win-win for us!
He's a darling.
My ebay standard cochin eggs are due to hatch Tuesday,I'm hoping to get at least a couple of white ones. but I guess I'll be grateful as long as they hatch.

Good morning, Opa.

Slept in til 6am this morning. First pot of coffee is almost gone, the crossword is worked, and yes it is a good morning. Any morning you have a pulse is a good day and today is now exception. Without checking the thermometer I can tell that it is quite cold since the wild turkeys haven't flow down yet. I've noticed that on bitter cold mornings they stay on their roost longer. I can't say I really blame them.

I'm going to put on another pot of coffee, wake Granny to give her her morning meds and then kick back and relax till it's time to fix her breakfast.

Where did you get them? How many were set and how many hatched? I know that the smaller the egg, the worse they travel with chickens. That's probably a big part of it.

I got them from a BYC member, I can't think of the the name right now, Mother something. We set 11 and only 1 hatched. We had 5 alive at last candling so I'm not sure what happened.
1mutts I'd love some banty cochins...if anyone wants to hatch them for me (unless I decide to buy an incubator! lol)
I was thinking on taking her up on it because they wouldn't have to be shipped and you could have some. Only have to find a way to get them to you!
