Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Yay! You were able to only buy 3? Lucky you! I have no where for chicks right now. I have 3 broodies, so am considering chick sneaking at hatch time. Lol. One girls has 5 mutts and 2 fav eggs under her. The 2 in the garage each have 2 a piece. I am only certain that 2 are faverolles.

Where you plan that out, don't mow the grass. Let it grow long. They'll eat it, AND taste so much better too. IF you get lucky, and have a girl go broody, set her on fake eggs for 3 weeks, slip meat birds under her one night, and have her do the raising. They'll learn foraging from her, and you'll have less feed cost but much better tasting birds.

Great info! Thanks for sharing! I usually let my birds free range in the nicer weather, but for some reason didn't even think about it making it taste better! We only have 3 meaties right now, but the kids are now in love with the "yellow chicks" of course, but since we want to keep meaties to feed the family and fill the freezer, I think we might go get a few more and hope for a couple females so we can have breeding stock and really fill the freezer...it's ok if we line one side of our property with coops, right? :p

Tap: We homeschool too. It will be ok, it will just take some adjusting. It sounds like it will be great though. :D

I live in ER too, but don't know anything about it. If you find out please let me know!

On Wednesday I'm hoping to fish the Grand between the north and south Lansing dams for both steelhead and walleye. On Thursday I'll probably fish the Huron below Flatrock for steelhead.

Good luck Opa!! I miss fishing for steelhead! I haven't done that in umm....15 years probably. We only went fishing twice last year due to the heat. Still debating whether we'll get our licenses this year. We don't have a boat but we do have access to about 10 different boats that the BF's brother has collected. Now that he's working a lot and has a new GF, he probably won't be using them anymore. I love fishing, probably more than anything else. Although today I spent a lot of money on supplies to build my grandson a nice toy box for his 1st birthday at the end of the month. I'm sure this project won't make me wanna break stuff like the trike did for my best friend's grandkids lol

I am sorry you missed it, I think they only hold the class 1 time a yr in Lansing, but I could be wrong. Always during Agriculture week, first week in March

good luck with the toy box, sounds like a fun project.

love the chicks, don't know any thing about silkies except I need a couple Merak vac. ones to be broodys for me.....not so sure any of my Orps are going to go broody

Another day has started and it should be a great one. Going to take Granny to the library first thing this morning and then come home and load the boat. I've never fished the Grand River in Lansing so I'm looking forward to trying it. Being able to fish for steelhead only 30 minutes from the house will be a real plus. Spending a afternoon fishing with one of my sons is what really makes today a great day.

I won't be able to go fishing tomorrow as planned so on Friday I will head for the Huron River. With the weather forecast for Saturday I may consider fishing that as well but I not sure how crowded the river will be. To many boats on the river does make it less appealing.

I need to go down to the shop and check on the new chicks. They probably need more water. I'm using a pop bottle waterer in their brooder and they are emptying it twice a day. Increasing the size of the bottle probably wouldn't be a bad idea since their water demand is going to do nothing but increase.

I am at day 19 with 42 eggs in my incubator. I had it go to 105.something for a bit because of a stupid friend touching it. *sighs* I never did candle them (I kept forgetting to get a light). Well, last night I heard "peep. peep, peep" :) And then I realized I had not taken them out of the auto egg turner! So at midnight I took them all out. 5 have pip holes (is that what it is called) and 3 were making noises. The ones with pip holes were 3 of the easter eggers. No one has hatched out yet, but I have one that is cracked all the way around. I am keeping my fingers crossed. My temps went crazy in the incubator several times with no one touching it. So I am happy that there is even some peeping.

In the mean time, I have had the worst morning sickness, which is actually all day sickness. The kids did not make it to school on Monday because I could not make it to the end of our short driveway to put one on the bus (he is autistic and 5 years old. Not like he can do it himself) and taking the other to school was out of the question. Sadly I have no one to help. Luckily the OB finally took me seriously and sent in a script for something. My issue is not keeping food down, it is movement making me ill. I can handle the nausea if I stay still. Anyway, this med takes the edge off. I am about 8 weeks along.
