Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I think we might go get a few more and hope for a couple females so we can have breeding stock and really fill the freezer...it's OK if we line one side of our property with coops, right?

Meat bird chicks are actually hybrid crosses, usually a Cornish with a white Rock. Since they are hybrids they will not pass on the same production capacity, and their offspring will likely be lesser quality. In addition, they are difficult to keep to adulthood, as they grow so fast and large they outstrip their cardiac capacity and tend to just drop dead suddenly, are too large to breed effectively, and are very heat intolerant.

If you want to breed your own meat birds you could keep some of the breeds that are used for that cross, or go with a dual-purpose breed such as Delawares (they are great egg layers too). It is probably much less expensive to buy meat chicks.

Well crap. Google is going to get me into trouble one of these days! Found out that there is an Ameraucana breeder (John Blehm) in Birch Run, and he sells his cull chicks on CL. And I reeeeaaaaalllly want some Ameraucanas. In a month. Not now. Going on vacation soon, and don't want the house sitter to have to chick-sit too.

Plus, Birch Run is about 3 hours away. So there is that factor as well. *sigh* Shoot. Shoot. Shoot.

I don't work today or tomorrow and I'm so very very tempted to just drive down and back today. But I like my husband. I like being married to him. So I should probably muster up some self-control.

I ordered some from him last month, haven't heard yet when they will be shipped but told him no hurry as it is so cold. there was a man at the class yesterday that said he lives close by and thought John was almost sold out, I know that he said you can buy his culls, colors that don't turn out as he had hoped, He brings extras to the show at Burch Run I think not sure when that is...They are all treated for Mareks unless you request him not to, .....you can also pick them up but need to call first
Woot! I have one chick out of the shell and the one who has been sitting there with the center all the way around cracked open is still sitting there that way chirping.
congrats on the chick and the new baby, Hope you feel better soon

Yeah. his order sheet shows being pretty much sold out. I'm not concerned with 'correct' colors and all that. I'd just like some blue eggs. the price is good on the culls too, if you don't live 3 hours away!

waiting to hear back about a coop on CL. it looks nice, and DH is in that area today so he could stop and look at it before he comes home from work. I'm just concerned it's not going to be large enough for what I think I'll need. I hate how un-communicative people can be on there.

I was hoping to get some of his culls last year but there weren't any during the months I was looking so I just got some easter eggers instead which was fine since they've laid green eggs every day all winter

If anyone knows where I can find some cayuga ducklings, my daughter would really appreciate it. DH finaly gave the okay when he got her a couple pekings for her birthday - he had no idea she really wanted cayugas and it was a surprise to both of us lol.

Wish I was closer to New Hudson, my daughter really wanted a couple seabrights too!

I am at day 19 with 42 eggs in my incubator. I had it go to 105.something for a bit because of a stupid friend touching it. *sighs* I never did candle them (I kept forgetting to get a light). Well, last night I heard "peep. peep, peep" :) And then I realized I had not taken them out of the auto egg turner! So at midnight I took them all out. 5 have pip holes (is that what it is called) and 3 were making noises. The ones with pip holes were 3 of the easter eggers. No one has hatched out yet, but I have one that is cracked all the way around. I am keeping my fingers crossed. My temps went crazy in the incubator several times with no one touching it. So I am happy that there is even some peeping.

In the mean time, I have had the worst morning sickness, which is actually all day sickness. The kids did not make it to school on Monday because I could not make it to the end of our short driveway to put one on the bus (he is autistic and 5 years old. Not like he can do it himself) and taking the other to school was out of the question. Sadly I have no one to help. Luckily the OB finally took me seriously and sent in a script for something. My issue is not keeping food down, it is movement making me ill. I can handle the nausea if I stay still. Anyway, this med takes the edge off. I am about 8 weeks along.

Yay for the eggs! How exciting! Congrats on the baby...sorry about the sickness. :/

Another day has started and it should be a great one. Going to take Granny to the library first thing this morning and then come home and load the boat. I've never fished the Grand River in Lansing so I'm looking forward to trying it. Being able to fish for steelhead only 30 minutes from the house will be a real plus. Spending a afternoon fishing with one of my sons is what really makes today a great day.

I won't be able to go fishing tomorrow as planned so on Friday I will head for the Huron River. With the weather forecast for Saturday I may consider fishing that as well but I not sure how crowded the river will be. To many boats on the river does make it less appealing.

I need to go down to the shop and check on the new chicks. They probably need more water. I'm using a pop bottle waterer in their brooder and they are emptying it twice a day. Increasing the size of the bottle probably wouldn't be a bad idea since their water demand is going to do nothing but increase.
Have fun! Fishing sounds so fun right now...I've never thought about doing much fishing this time of year other than ice fishing.

Yeeeaaahhh...I thought more about that after I posted, and how it would probably be cheaper and easier to just get meat birds...good to know about the delaware's...maybe we'll get a few of those...any other breed that you would consider a good meat bird? (eggs are a plus, but since we have layers, as long as they lay enough to keep our freezer filled with chicken they don't have to be terribly prolific.)

Michiganders, does anyone have large fowl Heritage RIR or any large fowl birds that are round like the ones in the pictures below? Any round breeds or mixed breeds that are round? I just love this body shape.
