Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

You can not be sure what you get from the bins unless the breed is clearly identifiable as a chick. The store employees often know little about chickens and less about why it would be important to properly identify them.

Hello Michigan!

Just popped in to say hi to y'all. It was a fabulous sunny day here in WA (we only get three a year) but sadly I spent the day getting all my pre-op stuff done. Finally got done about 4 and then it was getting more chilly.

So, this weekend I will finish my tax papers (you all have done yours, yes?) and then go shopping for all those love foods one eats after neck surgery - Ice cream, Smoothies, Custard, broth, tea etc. Boy, All the things I love but don't eat cus I'm on a diet

Oh, yeah, I ordered my new babies this past week, I'm getting Silver Grey Dorkings in about a month. I'm really very excited.

Brethren , I'm so glad your man is recovering. It's so amazing what they can do nowadays compared to 20 years ago. He probably would have lost that limb. Tell him to keep going, and soon he'll be doing marathons

Have a super weekend Everyone !

GOOD MORNING ALL!!
yesterday was beautiful, today we are enjoying a beautiful sun rise!!

Roosters are crowing, snow is melting, another beautiful day(just a little less sun) But it is OK

something I need to say......enjoy, and love your family, each member is so special and when one leaves the loss is so hard, life is too short, we always think we have more time. We lost our daughter last month, blood clots in both lungs. she had been suffering from RSD, a horrible pain disorder, caused from a bad surgery. For 9 yrs she fought every day to go to work and to help those around her in any way she could, She worked very hard at being the best Peggy she could be. I was blessed to have talked to her on the phone the morning she died, I regret that I didn't hear any panic in her voice just the pain which we had become accustomed to hearing. She made mistakes in this life; as we all do, but the good that she did for others far outweighed her mistakes. Cherish those around you and don't let the moment slip by when you could have said, I LOVE YOU. We say it a lot more around here lately, with more sincerity.

Let those you love, know you love them. Our life will always be blessed with the love and happy memories of Peggy, she was only 44

I went into TSC tonight and saw a bin with a big buff orpington sign on it. It also had a small tag that said "Red Pullet". What's your guess? I asked a clerk and she said it was a red buff orpington.

I was not convinced! I tried looking at breed pics, but at a day old, they look pretty similar to me. I looked up Red Sexlink, New Hampshire Reds and BOs. Just not sure!

I got six out of the red pullet bin last year; 3 of the light colored chicks were buff orps and the darker red look like basic "production red" mixes of NH, RIR... here's some pics before and after. I'm happy with them

Bofore: about 3-4 weeks?

After: About 6 months old

Not chicken related, but our Chinese Crested puppies were born yesterday! :) 2 boys (black one on the left and the apricot one under him) and a girl. Most likely keeping the girl.

.....are these hairless or powder puff....NO! Don't tell me! I'm not looking! I'm not looking!!

Sorry for the loss of your daughter.

You are very right! Tell them you love them. Always!

Snowflake, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter - it is always so hard to loose the ones we love, and loosing children is especially tragic. A good friend of mine died several days ago, and every time I saw him he would give me a big hug, and every time he left his family business her would come back in the door and say to them, "I love you all". Such a precious man.

Yesterday was the first day that it felt like spring may be coming - just that sweet smell on the air, and a certain mildness. Yay.

I am SO VERY SORRY for your loss. I love my children more than life itself and try to tell them every day. I can't imagine what you are going through. I am so very, very sorry.

Our dear friends/neighbors lost their 4 year old son about 10 years ago. When that anniversary comes up it's still hard. My other coworker/friend just lost her daughter Monday. Her daughter was only 30 years old and left behind her precious one year old little girl.

Life, of any kind, is precious.

Finally the weekend! For me anyways, DH had to work this morning.

So I sent our teenage son out to the coop yesterday afternoon to collect the blue egg that I knew should have been out there. I told him to go get the eggs, but give me the blue one because I'm going to set it in the incubator the next day (today!) and I wanted to store it. Oh my word, he dropped it!! Of all the eggs he collected, he dropped that one! I saw him drop something, then pick it up and chuck it into the field!

I opened up the back door & shouted at him... "Did you just drop my blue egg?!" He shouted back... "Um, Maybe!". UGH. So, I'm sitting here hoping that our other EE hen lays this morning. It's the last egg I wanted for this hatch set. The incubator holds 7 eggs. I wanted 3 barred rock, and 4 EE's. I had the timing planned out well... but it's my fault as I forgot to factor in "teenager" to my calculations. LOL. All well. If I don't get another EE... I have lots of other eggs I can put in there.

Same teenager has a bowling league this afternoon. So we'll be heading out to that later. VERY proud of him and his bowling. He plays for the varsity team, and the youth league. The varsity season just ended, and he ended that with a 195 average! Not too shabby for the freshman.

Laters!
