Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning all! Excited to hear that we are supposed to have some warm temps on Saturday. We are planning to head to the rabbit show in Mason so some sunshine and warmth would be nice. Thought I would share the pics of my son's birthday party. He is going to be 11 tomorrow so we celebrated on Sunday. I really can't wrap my mind around him being 11....when I just brought him home from the hospital....what happened to my baby!!

This is actually a giant rice krispy treat.

If you think wrapping your head around the idea of a child being 11, try imagining my position. My sons are all in their 40s with the older one sneaking up on 50. If I had started my family when I was in grade school maybe I wouldn't be so old.

My chicken Bluebell (and me and the kids) should be making a short appearance on Eight West on woodtv 8 tomorrow morning sometime on the 11-12 show.

Now if only I could get her to start laying some eggs...

Does anyone have an opinion on worming the chicks? Should we and if so what product? I pray that spring finally comes this weekend, been to cold to build the coop

Since my husband and I were not young parents, I can identify with what you are saying. I am always surprised when I have a birthday because I don't feel like I should be as old as the number states...sometimes I even grieve a little for years that I didn't use as wisely as I should have...my grandmother (who lived to 96) used to say...Darlihn', if you think time goes fast now, wait until you are my age. It seems like I was just 70...I don't know what happened to the time." I can remember thinking that I couldn't imagine time going any faster that it already was...and now when I look back, it seems like I had all the time in the world back then!

Snowflake, you may be able to place whole roasted coffee beans on a candle warmer (in a tin) and that might produce a coffee smell without needing to brew any. I know I had a couple candles made with whole coffee beans stuck in the wax and it smelled nice, but the tin it was in was poorly built and leaked wax all over.
I thought I was being smart by putting coffee beans in the melted wax of an unscented candle. It smelled great for 5 minutes, and then it smelled really strange. I entered the kitchen, where it was burning, to find a fireball on the stovetop. The coffee beans were on fire.

Sarah, I was just thinking about you and your cochins the other day. I'll be working tomorrow. What story are you, the kids and Bluebell part of?

Good morning! About the broody hen, maah, you can move her to a better location if you are careful. I use a large dog shipping crate for my setting hens. Be careful about the size of the front door grate; baby chicks must NOT be able to squeeze through the door anywhere. I bed it with shavings and hay under the nest, same as my nest boxes. Late at night, after she is really serious about being a broody, ( the bloody hand test?!) Use the least lighting you can work in, move her with eggs as carefully as possible. Have food and water in the crate, and lock her in. I usually set it up in the chicken house on the floor, so not a distant move or new strange location, and she stays locked in almost all the time. Good luck, Mary

We have what seems like a broody hen. We have never had hens hatch any eggs, we have put them in an incubator and done it ourselves. We are thinking of trying it out and see how it goes when the weather gets warmer (come on spring!!!!!!). My question for the day... we have a double row of nesting boxes - 6 on top and 6 on bottom. The possibly broody hen sits in one of these boxes on top of a fake egg! Sometimes there will be a real egg under her. Are there any problems with letting her be and keep her in those nesting boxes if she is broody laying on real eggs???
