I know I missed a few. some one wanted to know what kind of chickens to get? sussex are talkative and friendly as are Delawares,Jersey giants,Orpingtons, Brahamas and Marans. EE. s lay blue, green, pink, eggs. leghorns lay VERY LG. eggs for their size, mine only layed for a year and then became internal egg layers. large breeds tend to lay larger eggs and many can be used also as meat birds. smaller breeds tend to be good pets, say smaller eggs, so as some one said all depends on what you are looking for.

Hi, Laura, glad you are back and doing OK< Thank you for your condolence's. Yes we miss her very much!

I almost bought an Oriole feeder yesterday too! I will pick one up the next time I am in town.

I just told DH that we are going to have to start buying some sugar for the hummingbirds soon. Last year I kept count of how many cups of sugar we used for just the hummers.....84 cups!!

That's awesome! I love humming birds! And orioles. I am waiting to see a robin. The official sign of spring. Any spotted yet???

I've had robins here for a few weeks now. I haven't seen any hummers or orioles yet. I've put put orange halves and grape jelly but no luck yet.

For you folks that are concerned about heat lamps. Check out the heat lamps from premier1. More expensive but very safe. I know I have posted this before but it really is worth repeating.

They may be chilly at night but my 6 week olds seem a lot happier outside with all the space. They were feeling pretty cramped in the brooder by 3 weeks and so they went into a wire pen, then I started weaning them off the heat lamp. By 5 weeks they were getting too big for that pen, they were squabbling (especially the cockerels) and so I took them outside. I put them outside for about 4 hours one afternoon then brought them back in to sleep. The second day I put them out around noon and they stayed out from then on.

I enjoy my chickens but they're livestock, they're on our farm for very specific purposes. I don't want to spoil them. I guess I feel like if they can't handle living outside through the weather then they shouldn't be adding to my flock's gene pool. So far they've all made me proud, haven't lost a one.
Yes thats true but it's not natures way for them not to have a hen, who helps keep them warm
