Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Has anyone here ever ordered from efowl? My order was supposed to be shipped last Monday but they said it's delayed 2 more weeks . . . I could have gone ahead and bought all of the breeds I was looking for here in Michigan and had them by now at this rate. Ah well.

Whew, I finally caught up on all the posts! My chicks are doing great, eating me out of house and home! I put a water nipple into a pop cap and filled a 2 liter for them. So far, they are not really drinking from it. They do hit the nipple and get water, but if their old water is empty and I refill it, they go after if like they were in a desert! I don't to leave them without the old waterer for fear that they will get too thirsty.

How long does it generally take for them to get used to the water nipples?

Another day has begun and it appears that we have another chance at remaining rain free so I guess had had better take advantage of that and finish moving the birds to their summer pens. On Sunday I moved the new chicks (7 wks old) to the growout pen. That night I had to place them in the attached house. Last night 10 had managed to return there to roost and only 4 had to be physically moved. Hopefully one or two more nights and they will all have figured it out.

Making coops and enclosures totally raccoon proof is costly in both time and money. Welded wire, hardware cloth, electric fencing are all effective but not foolproof. Any fencing should be augmented with an eradication policy. Over the past 4 years I've trapped at least 50 raccoons from my yard and I still feel that I have barely touched the population. I was using box type live traps and for a while they were effective. However, raccoons are very adept at problem solving and they soon figured out how to circumvent the traps and get the bait. I've found Duke dog proof traps to be very effective and a trap made by Coon Collector to be equally effective but much easier to set.

Yet another beautiful sunny day, I could really get used to this.

I rehomed two roosters yesterday, hopefully they do ok, it certainly made it a bit quieter around here. I got to pet the Emu while we were dropping them off and visiting. My son absolutely loves them but is scared of them. So he spent most of the time we were there trying to get close and then backing up quick when they came to check him out.
It is amazing how just a few days outside cuts down the feed consumption. Yesterday none of the dishes were cleaned up totally when I went out in the evening to feed and close up. What a nice surprise! Everyone has been out digging in the leaves and running all over the place.

I must have overdone on taking advantaged of working outside on a beautiful day in the backyard yesterday. Got lightly sunburned. :th It was so warm, and I did not wear a sweater at all yesterday!

I ordered some books recently too. And they were pretty roughed up by the time they got here. Not cool, especially because they were new books. So how can I expect the post office to treat some hatching eggs? I mean, I can package them as carefully as possible, but if they're playing kickball with the boxes, packing can only do so much...
always get the ins. then the PO pays for the damage. make sure you point it out to the carrier if possible.....I know that doesn't help with eggs, but your other purchases shoul be covered
only thing I can add that hasn't been said ; is take all food up at night and store in metal trash can, and electric wiring (which I hope to get in place soon) fasten with screws and washers from the outside so it is harder for them to push in
Your friends can still come. There isn't a dress code per se, but a bridal gown may be a bit over-dressed.

they might feel a little out of place, but it is a beautiful park
Woke up to what I thought were babies crying (no I haven't had the twins yet)... It was one of my chickens baw-kawking...in the middle of the night :hmm
glad to hear from you, hope all is well
