Short coffee break from wood pile...
I moved the fence to allow the hens into the hosta garden. They are busy turning the leaves for tasty worms and bugs and I'm getting the bed mulched and fertilized in the bargain.

Can chickens overeat? I can see the crop get bigger with each worm they gobble down.

have you set any traps out for these coons.. i would do that also while your figuring out good security for you chickens.. a cooked or raw piece of chicken in the trap works good.

And don't forget marshmallows. I had barn cats eating the bait and setting off the trap so the marshmallows were the ticket.

Just my two cents.

there has been on very nice benefit to all the rain we've had here... When the puddles clear up, in its wake there are left over worms... My birds have been NUTS over those worms. Some have even dunked their faces to get some of those worms out of the puddles. AND I am not talking little puddles. I am talking ankle deep puddles. Sure does cut the feed. Love spring through fall. So much less feed.

My chickens run for the pond/swamp as soon as the gate opens - they'll dig in it up to their bellies all afternoon if I let them. The other day one of them caught a salamander in the muck and was running with it while the other 11 hens chased her - the roosters just watched and squawked. She swallowed it in one gulp after beating on the ground for a while. So entertaining.
Theron - a small bowl of water logged dry catfood in the trap works really well!
