Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi everyone! Hope ya'll are enjoying yourselves! this has NOT been a great week for me.

Yesterday I woke up to find that we had lost power, only for it to come on 15 mins before I left for work. I had to drive my DH truck to work (since I work 15 mins away and he works 45 min) and found out I can't drive it faster then 60 on the highway, otherwise it starts to shake horribly! By the way, I HATE his truck but he swears it's his "baby". I get to work, late, because I had to drive the backway. My DH THEN calls me at work and informs me that somehow, between the hours of 10pm and 8am, something got into our chicken coop.... and we now have no chickens. Not a feather or anything was left behind. There are no marks on the ground, no holes, fencing is still perfect, nothing in the coop. I am beyond devasated to say the least since these little fluff balls have all I have thought about in my spare time. BUT my bad day doesn't end there..... I go to leave for my lunch only to find out my DH's "baby" decided to have a brake line burst, resulting in my almost hitting someone pulling out of my work parking lot......

Yes that all happened in less then 8 hours.....

So before we run off and get anymore chickens, I am going to build some sort of coop that is indestructible.... ugh
Sounds like a tire needs to be replaced. A busted cord can make your vehicle shake real bad!
So sorry about your birds, I agree that it sounds like someone took them.

They couldn't have gone anywhere themselves, as thy were still too scared to go down the ramp, I am really kicking myself in the butt because I was going to put a little piece of thin wood over the doorway to help keep the cool breeze out at night.... but didn't do it Sunday night because I was too tired.... as far as a person doing it, we live far enough off the road (surrounded by fields) plus our lab (Jagger) and the neighbors beagles bark at EVERYTHING! So if they didn't make a commotion I doubt it was human, not to mention you cannot see our coop from the road unless you pull up to the side of the house..... just such a bummer!

Anybody know any place where you can buy "older" chickens? The Family Farm and Home near us just sells babies, and frankly I do not want chicken poop on my carpet/plants again, and I don't want to go through this hassle!!!

might want to get a game cam too !! That just stinks

Lucky for us, we have access to plenty (we own an Archery/hunting store)

which we may have to do, if DH would be willing to part with one!!

How old were your chickens? Mine are 7 weeks old in the coop but when they get scared the run out of there.. Maybe they just got scared & scattered.

My sister went out and put christmas lights on her apple trees to help stave off the frost damage. She got nothing last year because of the goofy weather and was so bummed. I haven't talked to her yet to see how they are looking . . . my horses were sooo looking forward to those fresh MacIntosh apples last year, too, lol.

No one else has a bantam chick or two that I can buy? Around 7 weeks old. Near Flint??

Chick - I'm in Swartz Creek. I have a beautiful little banty sebright you can have, if you want. I only have the one banty that came with a lot of 11 other chicks off CL and I'm not sure how it will fare with my 'big' chickens. It's supposed to be a pullet, I was told, but you know how that goes :). I work in Burton this Thursday and possibly Friday so I could meet you before I start work (about 8:45ish in the morning). Or I'm heading to Menards in Davison later this afternoon and could meet you in the parking lot.

I went yesterday to FFH and bought 3 banties! Thank you anyway. If it's raised with the bigger chicks, it won't know the difference....she'll just think she's a big girl

I'm sorry - I had read the post from 2 days ago. I was still catching up when I replied, lol. It looks just like your little black and orange sebright chick but it's about 6 or 7 weeks old. It holds it's own with all of the larger chicks it's in with now (24 total). That FF&H is nice, isn't it? The staff there is always friendly. They know me as soon as I walk in the door, lol.

I would have loved to have your lil seabright. Is mine a seabright? I kinda thought it was, but wasn't sure.

Ginger, you really need to put a proper pop door in where you can close and lock at night. Without it, you are always going to loose your chickens. You are giving the predators so very access to your chicks! Just putting a thin piece of wood in front of the door won't stop predators.
