Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I ordered an valencia orange tree over the weekend from Stark Bros Nursury and it's due to arrive today here at work!

It will be the first tree of my indoor orchard, and I'm super excited about it! I hope to add meyer lemons, key limes, and a bay laurel tree in the future to my collection.

I hope you have fun at the market Raz, be sure to tell us everything that happens!

Yorkchick, I'm sorry for your loss. Turkeys are so neat and I bet it was really hard on you to lose him. Thank you for sharing your lesson with us.

EDIT: Btw, anyone have any recommendations on pruning indoor plants?

If I had room I would do that, I grew up in Southern Calfornia

Well, I know I am going to have to replace the dang gaskets again, but, oh well. I am going to redo the thermostat, though I did better fail safe, and going to replace rad cap and a flush as well. Gah! If I don't figure this out, gonna have to get a new car...
Sent you a PM about your vehicle issue and a possible cause.

Hubby hit a coon last week did more then $1200 in damage won't get the car back till Friday or Monday. I don't like the wildlife right now
WHAT? A coon? You must have some massive coons around there. I hit a 8 point buck and did 1000 to a diesel F-250. What in the wide world of sports happened?

I'm now taking orders for hand knit stocking caps. $40, made from hand spun wool yarn that I sheared from my own sheep. Allow 4-6 weeks for completion. Very warm and soft, lots of stretch. Can spin in any shade of gray (white-black). PM me if interested.

DH just texted me pics of my beat up pullets! Two of them got it pretty bad. Is this normal? They have been living within site of eachother for two weeks, always separated by a fence, even when sleeping. They have free ranged 2 or3 times together. DH says I should not have taken the barrier down. How do you know when to do that?

Do the pullets have a place to hide? Until they're old enough to fend off an attack, they need to be able to hide. I've heard some people have boxes (brooders?) with small openings for the pullets but too small for the hens. I have my fence door cracked so the young ones can escape but the hens have to squeeze to get in. The pop door is also cracked so the pullets can escape to their coop where the hens can't go, as a secondary measure. Two of my hens are brutal towards the pullets but I've had them able to mingle for a couple of weeks now with no major injuries.

I posted this the other day but it shows the cracked door. You can see the hen guarding it but she doesn't go in.

I hear ya here Yorkchick. I think maybe you should have Tap on down to give you proper shooting lessons and the proper clothes to wear for those lessons. LOL. All kidding aside, I am sorry about your losses. Those buggers are just a real... naughty word.

On a completely unchicken related note, I am having a dickens of a time with my jeep. Replaced thermostat, water pump, hoses, head gasket and the tappit (SP?) gasket. I am still having an seriously annoying cooling issue. Water is BOILING in the overflow, and out of the overflow. I have burped the engine too. All seemed to be fine the last 2 days I worked, then today, boiling over again and this time steam was coming out of the engine where the tappet cover gasket has been replaced. I use the vehicle for work... What in the blazes am I missing? I would gladly take any adivice/ideas/fixes into consideration.

I had a similar issue with a vehicle...all the way to replacing the radiator. Still has the same issue....racked my brain until I came to the most ridiculous conclusion....I had used the old radiator cap on the new radiator....yep, it was a bad cap the whole time....bought a new radiator cap for a couple of bucks, no more issue...

Had a similar issue with my truck. It is full of electronic wizardry including a "chipped" key. It randomly kept "locking" me out of the ignition - the system would be shut down/locked out. Wait a while and it would start fine. Took it in a number of times to have it put on the computer. They couldn't find anything and concluded it either a short in the electrical system or a bad key chip. DH was driving it and called for me to come get him as it had done it again. I called the wrecker and had it towed to the dealership and told them to not try to start it until it was hooked to the computer. Got it hooked up, started it....it was a $30 ignition solenoid that I could have replaced myself. Lesson learned...don't overlook the obvious simple solution.

I have a little Cobalt and he ran it over it took out the radiator, air condition something or other, possibly the fan, bumper, he hit a deer last year and cost about he same thing.

Must be something about those Wyandotte ladies. LOL. Our SLW was quite grumpy towards our spring pullets as well. So we kicked her out of the run & let her hang in the goat pasture for a few days to knock her off her high horse (she sure was ticked at us, being stuck with the goats really got her feathers in a twist. Ha!).

The rest of the ladies were able to establish their pecking order without much incident after that. When we let the SLW back in with the flock there were no more issues. In fact... grumpy feathers hung out off to the side for the first couple of days. That'll teach ya. Every once in a while now she'll peck a youngster if they get too close to her, but she no longer goes out of her way to cause trouble.
