We've had to do that with some chicks around here & I'm so thankful DH handled it.

Weed burner or a small propane torch - if you can get close enough without harming your other plants/veggies. That's what I do around the areas for my horses, chickens, and garden. Otherwise, it's good old pulling and weeding by hand . . .

Ah! Thank you! I think I shall try the torch idea in the garden as it is currently at the stage where I have easy access to the weeds..as for by my porch, I would probably need to start a bonfire! Probably not such a good plan with a wood porch & log home...

Thanks for the offer! I love love love cosmos. In fact, I should probably get mine planted. I usually get the candystripe cosmos. They get around 4ft tall if I don't forget to water them during the first month or so. I don't think the orange ones get quite as tall, but the strip I have is right at the front of the bed. I might pick up a few packs of liliput zinnia seeds or something to stick in there.....


SO happy to hear that I'm not the only wintersowing person around here! I've got hardy hibiscus coming up, blue lace flower, marigolds, snapdragons, and I got basil and oregano to start for me this year too! My front flower bed is 75% wintersown plants. The back flower bed (the one we just fenced) is a mix of wintersown, my cousins thinning their beds, and clearance rack at lowes.

can anyone give me some tips on harvesting oregano? I have a plant that's about 24in across and it looks like its getting ready to flower. can I just cut it back to get all the leaves on top harvested?

I finally got around to taking photos of the coop with the new beds planted. The violas kind of reminded me of "bantam pansies" so I went with those and they match the fabric flowers I found at a Salvation Army thrifty. I also have red morning glories planting along the sunny southern side of the run, but I'm not sure how much height I will get out of those with our sandy soil.

That is what I do with my oregano, it seems to grow better if it isn't putting its energy into flowers. They are some pretty purple ones though, if I remember correctly. I mulched around all my herbs with thick cedar bark mulch and they are really going crazy this year.

I had a bantam Vorwerk go broody almost 3 weeks ago, then two days later the other two decided to join her. Now I have three hens trying to sit on 5 eggs. Should be interesting when they hatch.

oh yeah cut back the flowers... I usually harvest older leaves and newer shoots, try to leave the bulk of the plant, remove stems and toss them in my dehydrator.
