Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It is so strange to me to see all this talk of so much rain this year when we were all in severe drought last year. I suppose, at least, this will replenish the ground water table and lakes that were low from last year.

K, I need a chicken apron/saddle what ever you call it. Who makes them? One of my girls is the roosters favorite girlfriends and she's getting pretty banged up ( no pun intended ). So if one of you makes them could you kindly drop a link to your etsy store or where ever I might get one? Thanks!

We've had the B17 flying over today, it's visiting and doing tours. The roosters don't like it, too low, big and noisy. They keep doing their hawk call and everyone runs.

We did get a little rain yesterday. Not very much but up here we could use some.

Just had my first "scare" of the neighbor's two yellow lab puppies (9 mos old) escaping & making their 100mph run straight to my porch while the birds were out free-ranging.

Pretty sure dogs never even noticed that there were chickens around! I ran out as soon as I heard commotion on the deck & got the dogs' attention, got them off deck & into yard to burn off some energy while neighbor was calling to them (they are getting much better at listening to their mama!!) Half of the birds were calmly laying under weeping cherry tree, other half resting in a lump in some mulch under deck. The birds never made a peep or commotion while the dogs were running around (is this normal??? I kind of expected them to go nuts if all of a sudden their was wild activity around that they weren't used to).

Don't think pups would intentionally hurt birds, but as they are puppies & hyper labs, I am positive they would want to play with them, which would probably lead to a pretty ugly outcome!

They don't "visit" often, but I never let the birds out of run unless I am home. Luckily my neighbor likes the birds & doesn't want anything to happen to them either, but every once in awhile Addie & Zoe (pups) are just too quick before they can get them on their leads....and I am the first place they visit (we are the only two houses that share about 11 acres, surrounded by the farmer's cornfield & a couple 100 acres of woods).

Phew. Had my heart racing for a few seconds there :D

I used to have the ends of my dogs leads go right in the house under the door. Would put them on before I opened the door. Nothing like trying to chase a bird dog and a pit bull through the neighborhood. LOL. They were such good dogs though, no one was ever worried. Just me. I have a brit spaniel that I'd take with me to deliver papers. This was in the middle of the night, so when I'd get to the condos that I delivered, I'd take Beregond with me, and he got to enjoy a walk. Never a dull moment for him. He'd head straight for the duck ponds, never got any, but I ended up having the worst case of wet dog smell in my car from him... Baby on the other hand, he was not so fond of ponds. When we moved to this house, the neighbors had chickens, and if Baby would get loose, or one of their chickens was in the run, never had an incident. Even the wild turkeys would get in the dog run, and Baby couldn't give a rip about them either. Put a raccoon or a possum... He'd go bat sh.. LOL

Anyway, on to broody related news. Had a claw go through a developing egg today. Was a bummer, was a fav egg. The marans eggs ( i think) are good. BUT now Little Pretty and Beulah are sharing two eggs. LOL Really trying to limit the numbers this year. Beulah is a good mama... She's just chosen to brood with Little Pretty, and LP has been sitting on eggs for a week now. I am afraid that if I tried to give Beulah her own eggs next to LP, she'd abandon them when LP's start hatching. Can I move her to a different location? No... have the phoenix in the broody coop now, LP is in the grow out coop, The big coop is empty, but Beulah likes the grow out, and will keep going back to it, and no I can't lock her in the big coop, cuz then the other girls couldn't get in to lay, and Ekta is brooding in the garage and is being a demon. She's got 10 days to go.

I am thinking I might just have to build a nest box in the run itself just so I can keep the coops for broodies and babies.

Got my fence alert at a horse expo, don't recall seeing one at TSC
Thanks Mary, will look on line I think I saw something like that on Priemer 1's sight

baby chicks kept getting away from the momma, slipping under the fence, so I let her out to be with them, the other hens don't seem to be paying any attention to them at all.....they all had to go into the tractor to check out what was in there though
found the breach in the fence heading out to take care of that now
