Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ok, I'm going to sound dumb here... but,

What is criminal about butterfly gardening? Isn't that just a flower bed / flower garden?

Or was he breeding in enclosed butterfly houses in front yard, or what?

I'm trying to picture this and I just can't... criminal flower beds... I don't understand. You'd think the city would welcome the flowers & landscaping. Someone please explain this one to me.

Especially a city named GARDEN City!!!!!

The irony is that this whole area was zoned as RF1 (residential farm - 1 family home). Then without notice, the zoning was changed to increase the tax base.

RaZ, is there anything in particular any of us can do that would be helpful? sharing our support and outrage here isn't really going to count for much in getting anything done about your situation and i at least would like to do what i can to make an actually difference.

Signed the Midland petition.

So, we went out to do the barn chores yesterday evening (feed/water animals, clean bedding, collect eggs, etc), and found our new Marans hen, "Penny", (that we got from Wynette at Chickenstock) is limping.

It had been raining here all day, so I think she maybe slipped on a wet surface or something. The ramp maybe? Not sure. We pulled her out and cleaned up her feet to look her over. I don't see any physical injuries, no swelling or heat, however her left leg is sore. Ugh. I hope it's nothing serious. She would put weight on it, but had an obvious limp. I'm hoping she just sprained something & will heal. So we removed her and set her up a nice home inside the barn in a large dog kennel. She actually looked instantly content when put in there. She walked around on the dry straw and ate/drank from her very own bowls without having to share. She didn't seem stressed at all, so that's good. We checked on her before bed, and I checked on her this morning. She's doing fine. Hopefully a few days in the kennel will help her. She doesn't need to climb the ramp for the coop or roost or anything so her leg can have time to heal. I'll continue to check it for heat or swelling, etc. Keep your fingers crossed for her.

My ee's were kinda anti-social to the others, but in all fairness there were more of them, so victory in numbers?. Each one of my birds has had their own personality, but if one does go for a same breed start there is always the little colored leg bands!

My neighbor has a speckled sussex and though she is buck wild she has deemed me the kind food lady and squats for me to pick her up! Crazy girl.

I lost my white rooster today. Mine are pets, i am pretty messed up about it. I do think it was the insulation. Early in the spring he had reached manhood and challanged my main rooster, lost. Went off his feed for a bit and started seeking alternate feed before i caught it and caught him going for the insulation. I thought i had got him in time, but it is the only thing i can find in my whole coop area that could have damaged his insides to give possible liver failure. It was a thin wall, and mice had started a hole; didn't take much to inspire him.

Also, i discovered that skunks can and will dig up old bodies. So i would definitely put them on the list of chicken eaters. I haven't seen him since i started locking the coop up again at night.
awww...sorry about the roo, fuzzy!

I didn't see a link so I could sign?

RaZ, I just cannot believe the money these people are spending to trump up stuff out of nothing. I read your story. I would definitely start fighting back, appealing, and then start the plan to own the entire city limits from all the mental anguish, physical anguish that irresponsible PUBLIC paid employees have caused you and your family. Not to mention the poor butterflies and chickens that suffered from it all...this is beyond justice and what a sorry waste. I will be happy to come and talk to any reporter in your area. Let them give ME a ticket for freedom of speech with an opinion. I don't even live in that town so a ticket for chicken keeping would be an absolute joke.

That story you linked to above lists BIG cities that allow backyard chickens in Michigan....I am proud to say that East Lansing is on that list, way to go Mid Michigan and MSU

I guess "Garden City" is just TOO good (NOT). Cities like Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Ann Arbor, and East Lansing are NOT trashy because of rampant backyard chicken keeping, that would be the angle I would present to the next "jury" you face (I do not understand how the jury could find you "criminal"...???) sigh...
