Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well I guess I'm just having crappy chicken luck this summer. I had a dentist appointment this morning, so I didn't get out to check on the birds this morning. When I got home, I was checking on the juveniles and glanced out the window to see my EE cockerel in the corner of the run, clearly dead. Yep. One of the 3 birds that survived the dog attack in July. I immediately went out to check for the pullet (my one remaining quality BLRW) and found her huddled up in their coop. Got her out, looked her over (she's fine), and put her in a more secure run, and put the 2 white silkie juveniles I have in with her. Judging by the damage to the cockerel, I'm guessing it was a coon. No head, front ripped open, organs 6 feet away, feathers everywhere. It must have been in there this morning when the dogs were let out and they scared it off. That's the only thing I can figure since it didn't go after the pullet. No big loss there as I had the cockerel listed for free-for-the-taking on CL, but still disappointing because NOW a predator knows where to get play-things. Yesterday when I was checking on the LITTLE chicks (the ones that DH and DS had to round up on Sunday while I was at work) , I climbed up into the coop to fill the feeder to find one floating in the water bucket. So there goes another bird. I think I might put the 6 POL pullets in with the big girls tonight simply because the big coop can't be dug into, or fencing pulled off for something to get in. They're the same size as the hens, so hopefully they hold their own and figure things out without any bloodshed.

Sitting here drinking coffee and considering how early I should wake Hope and Granny. We're going to an area lake to wash some worms and hopefully our efforts will be rewarded with enough bluegills to provide a meal. Doesn't really matter as long as we get out of the house for a few hours. Removing fat from chicken stock is really quite easy if you aren't in a hurry. Place in the the refrigerator overnight. The fat will congeal on the top and can be easily removed. Sometimes if the stock is thick I will add a little more water so that there is more liquid for the solids to separate in.
Agree that is exactly what I do to make the fat congeal on the top for easy removal with a spoon prior to processing/canning. It works perfectly & allows for virtually all fat removal.

Well, we survived fair week…only 51 weeks until we get to do it all over again! The kids did really well for their first year doing open class in addition to 4-H.

On Monday we were scheduled to dip ice cream at the fair with our 4-H club. The plan was that as soon as I got home from work, we would jump in the car and head down to the fair. DS had just fallen (off a 6-gallon bucket he was using as a launching pad to get a stick out of a tree…) when I got home. I wrapped it in an ace bandage, told him it was only a sprain and we headed to the fair. We got home about 10:30pm and he was complaining it was hurting. I loosened the wrap and gave him an ibuprofen. Tuesday am, we checked it and it was still really tender and swollen so off to the express care..then to the orthopedist…yup, it was broken. My own American Ninja Warrior!

Finally got DH to take pictures of my coop. I am really proud of this...I sketched it out and built it myself. While I can see lots of areas where I could improve in the future, I am pretty impressed that it turned out as good as it did. The guineas seem to be pleased with it. They are the craziest things...we got 5 eggs from 2 females in a 24 hour period when it cooled down after that hot spell.

My harvest for today. It's like this about every three days. I've been a canning, pickling freezing maniac. Grocery bill will be down this winter. We've had a few buggy tomatoes. The girls are loving those. And my girl jebs at a tomato worm today. Ick

Awesome.
I have yet to get ONE red tomato out of twelve plants.
Did get 5 ripe grape tomatoes today.
Gonna be a rough canning year for me...glad the past 2 years were good...

This summer, and I use the term lightly, has been pitiful.

Same here, no ripe tomatoes yet. The ones that try all have blossom-end rot. It's a shame too because this is excellent canning weather and I have very little to can. I managed some spicy cumin summer squash pickles and a single jar of pickled hungarian and serranos (waiting for salsa if it ever happens). But that's been it. Was hoping for some ketchup too.

What's the summer squash pickles? Care to share the recipe?
We also planted early. Frosted a couple of times but everything did fine. Maybe that's why I've got ripe? Last year we had red tomatoes all summer it seemed. But it was hot as blazes too. They must like the heat
