anyone in the kalamazoo area want 3 bantams, 2 hens and a roo? i don't know the breeds and i've never actually seen them, but apparently i know of someone who wants to get rid of them before winter and my DH said no

. since i don't know what i'd do with them, i can't really complain, but i promised i would ask around to see if anyone is interested, so i am. i will try to get more info one them.

I'd be willing to dress up if it meant I got a chance at the pest. I came home tonight and checked the field for any sign of coyotes only to find 5 bucks from spike up to 7 point eating and bedded down.

I think some one took out our resident buck... There hasn't been sight of him for about 3 weeks. There had been a lot of shooting not too long ago, and I don't mean the air cannon either. So, I think one of the new neighbors down the way may have made a meal out of him. Sucks, he's been here for 2 years now.

Tap, Silly, how are those phoenix? I am very worried, and paranoid that they may have been effected by the mareks that is taking out some of my chicks now. Obviously if it is taking out some of my chicks, there is always the very strong possibility that it's been in contact with the birds your got from me, and I am very sorry if it has.

Brand new to this, just getting my research done and tonight someone is coming to look at my shed to see if they can help us convert it. I was planning on buying pullets or young hens maybe off craigslist or wherever, but am reading some about biosecurity and bird diseases, etc. How much of a concern is this realistically and is there somewhere I can buy hens that have been vaccinated or that that is not so much a worry? I am in the grandville area. Thanks for any info you might have.

All this talk of fairs and here's our thoughts as to the present state of affairs. When I started going in the 70's the entrants used to label their animals, ie. cow, horse, donkey, goat, pig, hog, rabbit, chicken, duck, etc. with what breed they were, or cross breed, and other useful information. Now it seems the kids don't know what they are showing. Over the last few years I asked entrants what kind of rabbit is that, chicken, duck...the answer MOST of the time was "I don't know". Look at the cages - not information other than the entrants name. Part of raising the animal should be focused on what breed it is? Off my soapbox.

CL in goats at a fair. Another problem is that most entrants have never had any animals tested for anything. And when you buy an animal how many times did anyone get a med record with the animal? It's certainly a bummer that someones herd may have a viral problem. Take Mareks. I was talking to the MI State vet and he told me most chickens have been exposed to Mareks since it passes thru the air in dander. The chickens themselves develop an immunity to it, or die from the exposure. You can get them vaccinated and/or let them develop an immunity on their own - so I've been told.

Rabbits are tasty and I have 4 that are going to camp purty soon!

Nova, nobody better be shooting deer yet! Early doe is next month and here on the FAHM we plan on filling the quota.

I went out to let the layers out this morning, and heard a LOT of racket in the juvenile chick part of the coop so I opened the door to see what was going on. It wasn't great. My lone olive egger pullet (who is adorable, doesn't mind being handled, and is from eggs I got from Lark Rise, so egg color should be great) is lying on her side, half buried in shavings. I could see that she was still breathing so I snatched her up and put her into the little dog crate and made her some scrambled eggs. I really have NO IDEA what to do for her though. I can't find an injury anywhere on her, but the bottom line is that she's not using her legs very well, and not using her right leg much at all. She keeps rolling off to the side when I set her down. I did force-feed her some egg, and put Tylan in her water because I don't have much else that I *can* do. She did have some bright green poop on her, but there's no telling if that's from her or another chick pooping on her.

If it is any comfort, only 1 bird that my daughter took home died, we vaccinated them all as soon as we suspected Mareks, mine continued to die, hers were here during the time before,during and after the vac. They were housed in a different coop while here, So maybe being out of the concentrated area makes a difference.?

most hatcheries and some breeders offer Mareks mac. if at all possible I would get it, breeding to resist is 1 thing but you loose a lot of birds in the meantime. I went 4yrs before I had a problem. If you know what breed you want, get it and are careful when bringing in new birds(isolation, for 3or4 weeks, then put one of yours in with them for 3or4 weeks if no one dies you are good to go.
you can also vaccinate your own birds, if you hatch from eggs it is easy to do.costs about $35 for Mareks fac. if I remember right.

sorry about your sick chick, how old is she?
