I haven't had ANY problems buying off of CL. Just look things over, and if you're not comfortable with the general health and maintainance of things, walk away. It's that easy! If you're not opposed to driving a little way (I'm sure it would be cheaper than $80 shipping!) there is a guy in muskegeon that sells started chicks on CL. They *should* be old enough to not need a heat lamp and be used to being outdoors. I know several on here have bought chicks from him. Just a thought. Just run a search on CL for "pullets" and it should come up.

See that was my original plan, but then i start reading about biosecurity and vaccinations etc and get scared about going that route as i dont really have enough experience to spot health issues. I was recently near shipsy and saw signs for chickens for sale at some amish farms but i dont know what ages or if the amish vaccinate and they obiously dont advertise online or have a number too call, lol

Awesome. I'm probably going to get my first negative feedback from selling Araucana eggs on eBay. I only offered them for sale when I was certain my eggs had excellent fertility. In fact, today I just hatched a batch of my Araucana's eggs. I had a 90% hatch, with zero that didn't develop. The 10% that didn't hatch were dead in shell, tufted chicks that I assume suffered from the lethal gene.

The person has four eggs developing. I'm not going to lie, when I first started with Araucanas and shipped eggs, I thought it was GREAT to have four developing! I am guessing they don't feel the same way, or know how delicate/difficult it is to hatch shipped Araucana eggs. The breed truly is harder to hatch than others, they just don't seem to take shipping as well as say, black copper marans eggs.

Incubating shipped eggs are hit or miss & it's unfortunate that some people just don't understand that. They have 4 developing, so they can't blame infertility, and if they reached them unbroken it's just not fair to leave negative feedback for that.

Just out of curiosity... they have 4 developing out of how many did you send?

Today is day 6 past the due date.....no baby yet.

My best friend told me that if calves are born before the due date, its a heifer, but born after the due date its a bull. Well, it went over the due date.....

But at this point, I will be happy with a live and healthy bull calf. I am sure that she will deliver before or on Wednesday next week for that is full moon. More babies are born during full moons than at any other times.




What I don't get is that everyone here have been saying that they had a wet summer, but it has been dry with sparse rain here. We had no rain for 3 weeks in July, and no good and soaking rain for 2 weeks now.

My friend says the same thing about her horses/foals. If the mare delivers early or on time, filly. If they're late... colt. She says that stinking mother nature must need the extra time to grow the boy parts. LOL. Unfortunately, it's usually spot on. Not sure if it's the same for cows.

Ok, like I said yesterday, brand new at this. Now I've kinda decided to go the route of ordering pullets from a hatchery because I've heard that raising from chicks need tons of attention for about five weeks and no days where you are out of town or whatever and I don't think we are ever home for five weeks straight without having to go away a day or so. So I hear its no good buying off craigslist and there are limited hatcheries that sell started pullets. The ones I am looking at, McMurray and chicken scratch are about $80 shipping. So I am thinking of a couple options...
1. If somone else in greater grand rapids area would like to go in on an order with me and maybe split the shipping cost? Not sure how much each additional chick adds but im assuming it would be a better deal.
2. If someone else is ordering chicks soon and has room and ability to raise about 6 extra for me for the first month and i would pay them an agreed fee for taking care of them to that point.
Or if anyone else has any other suggestions, i am open to the wisdom of the group.

If it can go wrong it will..... if you have live stock you will have dead stock... the trick is to do your due diligence, and if stuff still happens, which it will, you know you've done your best....but we're supposed to have fun with it too!

Indeed.
Anything that you can do to minimize the risk is advisable but sometimes you just have to take that leap.

If it can go wrong it will..... if you have live stock you will have dead stock... the trick is to do your due diligence, and if stuff still happens, which it will, you know you've done your best....but we're supposed to have fun with it too!

Very true. Now just deciding where to leap from.... hmm

I've been away with the new job. I hope everyone is well! My Silkies started laying! I've now got a porcelain split in with a porcelain and a lavender split in with a lavender. I have a few eggs to put into the incubator. Wish me luck.
