Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good Morning, all!

Isn't CrAzY ChIcKeN RaNcH in Capac also? Even tho I haven't seen her on FB lately. Might be a good place to get chicks, Clucks.

Shhh... the sun is out! Gonna pretend I don't notice so it'll stay out.

Have a good day...

Welcome Cluckn!

I was discussing what I needed to do to improve the chickens outdoor runs.. and DH started complaining about spending more time and money on the birds.......... so I had to set him straight...Look, you're the one that wanted them put in pens, so, we have to set the pens up properly so they aren't wallowing in muck and poop (so I'm not wallowing in it either)! I told him we have to set the fence panels up on 2x6's and fill the runs with sand to allow drainage and for me to be able to clean them. I said it's that or the chickens run loose. If we don't do anything we then spend more money and time treating sick birds or replacing them, just a host of possible issues, not to mention no eggs or birds to eat. and well I'm just not going to deal with that!! So he came home from traveling yesterday and today, he's calling around for sand and lumber! LOL!

We got the netting secured over the Sumatra run last night. The tree that was in the run has grown so much that I had to cut a hole in the netting for the tree to poke through, then I sealed it back around the trunk loosely and wrapped the trunk with some vinyl to protect it. I'll probably make a collar from PVC pipe to make it hold up better. The girls will be happy to finally be outside! Tonight, I need to make some roosts for inside the coop! I told DH about wanting to make an exterior nest box and he thought that was a great idea !. Always seems to be something that needs changed or improved or modified with these chickens! OH......... shoot.. lol, I just remembered, I needed to put up gutters on the edge of the coop we just covered in netting........

.. may have to do it from on the roof...

Yesterday I cut the walk through door for the turkey coop at turkey height, to allow the turkeys outside and help to keep the elements out. I have to build roosts for them as well. We'll be processing a few of the toms for thanksgiving so they'll have more space soon. So much to do!

I picked up a apple peeler at bed bath and beyond. It worked on an apple and potato (hash browns!) but, I so wanted to get this one...I popped into a local antique store to see if I could find one. I love these older kitchen items.. they seem so much better built, and it just looks cool! https://www.lehmans.com/p-13-lehmans-own-reading-78-apple-peeler.aspx

What I want to know is.......... why do Cream separators have to be so expensive? The new ones are build cheap in India. I guess I answered my question.. old ones are in high demand considering the options! LOL!

I've been marking posts to respond for some time, however, usually someone else does that before I do so I am going to..... give up. I know, I know !

Last Sunday evening I went squirrel hunting. Saw 1 squirrel, 1six point whitetail and a flock (family) of turkeys. Got no shot at the rodent. Today I went out again a d saw a flock of geese Canadas fly over at tree top level. Love it in the woods this time of year especially

Jo is improving in mobility and strength. Grandson has been giving free physical therapy sessions and my back is improving. He took a long weekend trip whitetail hunting to Missouri. (Ah to be young again.) They have Monster bucks there. He took a 10 point there last year with his bow, actually (and arrow).

Made a list the other morning of tasks to do, start, finish. Ended up with a whole page 8x11 lined full with more than 1 item per line and 4 things above the lines. Have not been exactly setting the world on fire with jobs completed. Not a village smithy, I. me?

Had to send my 2 year old hardly used fish finder-GPS in for repairs. $175.00 fee no matter what the problem. Darn thing will not turn on. Took better part of a day to troubleshoot the wiring. Had 12 + volts all the way to the unit so, in she goes.

Condolences to those suffering loss or simply suffering. Sam, an elderly neighbor of mine, now deceased, in her eighties, gave me a very wry smile when she inquired as to my age and I said just starting the seventies. Now I know -----..... ! And so will you. Welcome to the club. Keep up the good attitude.

I enjoy the new and not so new joys, that so many of you share, the livestock and pets you get and how you do it, the accomplishments and beauty of children and other loved ones. This group is a wonderful disorganization that gives me respite from the oft times strife of the world news. I know I'm not the only one who feels so , just want you to know. Thanks to YOU ALL

Finally managed to catch a legal Northern the other day. Would have been happier had I not been fishing for walleyes. Still nice to catch something.

We go through a gallon and a half of raw milk a week and my kids used to get fed up with me having to take the cream off the top before they could tuck into a bottle. So I dusted off my trusty lemonade jar with the spigot on the bottom and pour all three half-gallons into it, let it sit in the fridge overnight and there you are. Dispense the milk from the bottom and the cream is left on the top. Works for us.

And just so I don't leave here without saying something socially awkward and contrary, I just wanted to add that I have NEVER ONCE peeled an apple or felt the need to peel an apple. In our house, we eat apples with the skins on, make applesauce, juice, apple butter, cider, vinegar, pies, and jelly with the skins on. That's where the party's at.

Anyone else here participating in NaNoWriMo this year? National Novel Writing Month? Just curious.

Something is really wrong with my chickens. The only treats they eat is watermelon, mealworms and cracked corn. They HATE scratch. We had gotten a little sample bag and they turned their beaks up to it lol.
Hopefully nothing wrong, mine only like the cracked corn and mealworms and then watermelon, pumpkin and I found out today cooked butternut squash.

So DH and eldest son spent the weekend repairing my chicken run, built me a duck run and yesterday we did all the bird netting over both. 200 sqft. The hawks have been bad as of lately and we have a falcon who will sit on the cedar post in the run, just waiting.

I had someone tell me today that bird netting will get full of ice and snow and will not work in the winter. Ik Dh will kill me (not literally, lol) if I tell him we have to take it down and do something else. Looking for opinions and options here. He got pics on his phone, I will have to learn how to download them so I can post and show you, after chores of course!!

I am totally cracking up! Well, all the GOOD stuff (like the fiber) IS in the peel! So, having only made apple butter for the first time this year..shall I assume you just strain the peel out after all has cooked down?? You have piqued my interest! LOL!
