Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ok so today I just noticed something on the little calendar from my youngest's school. What do y'all know about this?

Hey guys! Thought I would mention this. Anyone heard of Sasha farm? Well, they take in Roos IF they come with a hen! Lol probably taking one of mine there soon.

Fish the Huron river below Flatrock today. Not a bad day to be on the water but the wind was starting to blow pretty good when we quit at 2pm. All of the leaves in the water made fishing extremely difficult. We were almost constantly having to reel in and remove the leaves from the lures. I think that the score was 10437 leaves caught and one 5lb steelhead.

Nice bright chrome male that will feed two families.

The 1st pic is the duck run and bottom 2 are chicken run. Keep in mind I'm a 1st timer. Still have to winterize around the runs and the bird netting is hard to see, I know. Thinking I may need supports down the middle of the duck run. They do like walking out of the pond right into their run for the night.

Suggestions?

off to a good start, but yes I would recommend more support under the netting.

Had to share one of the last chicks hatched this year by my sumatra hen... she's my little button head, very small and just cute as a button! Love the poof on her head!

Yesterday started out with something that has never happened to me before, I slept through my alarm. I almost never am awakened by an alarm clock. Most times I am awake well before the clock sounds allowing more than adequate time for enjoying a couple of cups of coffee, checking my email, reading the BYC posts, and working 3 crossword puzzles.

David arrived at our agreed upon time of 530 only to find me sound asleep. I had gone to bed earlier than usual yet there I was still asleep. Now this morning when I could sleep as late as I want I am wide awake. Go figure.

For those of you who are facing your first winter with netting covering your run, two things are going to occur. The first will be your amazement at how much snowcancollect on plastic netting. You wouldn't think that it would be possible for snow to completely blanket it. Snow should fall right thru the mesh; right? Wrong. Once the first flake has landed on the mesh it is quickly joined by another and each successive flake attaches to the prior one until in short order it is completely sealed.

The next surprise will be just how much plastic netting can stretch. I have a high quality commercial grade netting covering my run. It was given to me by a friend who decided to quit raising birds. He lost his entire flock of pheasants when the snow load stretched the netting low enough to suffocate his birds. He had spanned 8' without support and the mesh stretching ended his bird rearing ambitions.

Sagging mesh can be prevented with having adequate cross members to support it, however, stretching isn't your only concern. Snow can weight quite a lot, and each successive snowfall adds more. Soon you can have a collapse situation unless the supporting structure is adequately designed.

Frozen waterers, accumulating snowing, frostbite, frozen eggs. Don't you just love winter?
