Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

All of the rain has brought down the majority of the leaves so hopefully with the warming temperatures predicted for Saturday I can get them picked up and the grass mowed one last time before winter's next onslaught of cold.

Molting birds, dropping egg production, freezing temperature, frozen waterers, drafts, frostbite, the list of things we poultry aficionados must worry about oft times seems endless. Now I find out that a woman with onions could be a concern.

Thanks for the morning laugh, Opa...boy do I need it this morning. Absolutely dyin' here at work this morn....thank goodness I have a 4 day weekend starting at ~1500 today....

I just made it to 10,000 words in my NaNoWriMo story! Unfortunately, I'm having to go back and revise, something they warn against doing in order to keep the words flowing. But I have HUGE plot holes that need filling. I should also go back and add chickens to the story since they also advocate that you write what you know :p I mainly write in the morning while my kids are getting ready for school and in the evenings, right before bedtime and I'm stretched to meet the average daily goal of 1,600+ words.

So I don't have much time for writing either, between the kids, the coop and robotics but I'm trying. We aren't going to make it to competition this year (robotics). Because of our bumpy start with the school, we simply cannot make up for lost time. We would meet at our place on Saturdays but the board we use to practice with is stuck at the school, since we don't have a pick-up truck to transport it and it doesn't fit in our van (we got it to the school on the roof of the van but I would rather not repeat that fiasco). Our last school let the group meet on the weekends but this school won't. The secretary put her foot down on that before the I finished asking.

In the end, we managed to coax one member from the school, a third grader. It's really kind of disappointing but we're doing what we can with what we have. Right now, we're trying to send letters to scientists at major universities to ask questions about their efforts with devising seawalls around NYC to prevent rising sea levels from flooding the city during storms like Sandy. My kids get it but handing a 3rd grader a NGM article and expecting him to read it, let alone glean any useful information from it, enough to ask pertinent questions to a scientist, is asking a bit much. He just wants to play with the Legos. Anyway.... a little frustrating and far from what we had at our last school. I'm starting to think we may never get to that point due to the demographics of this area and that my expectations are too high. The east side of the state is much more in tune with science and technology, due to Detroit and the automotive industry, something this side of the state is hardly interested in.

Thanks Raz for the heads-up on the Fiber Coalition. I gave them my 'like' and will keep tabs on their events and such. I do not recommend anyone liking me on FB, however. I have very strong onions and they will make you cry.

Now, I will take my kefir water and attempt to get some words written that actually count :p

Raz - can you pm/or post the info about the December meeting in TC. That is close enough that except in the case of a snow storm/bad roads I could go.

We did end up with a powdered sugar dusting last night.

Still so much work to be done outside but I now also have inside work. My brother dropped off a tote of coyote hides which I will be sewing and quilting into a blanket that he has sold. It is easy and good money. I get paid by the hour for the straight sewing and by the square foot for the quilting.

The chickens will be getting all the sunflower seed heads now and not part way through the winter. With all the rain I hung the heads in the garage in a net but there is still too much moisture and they will not dry out. I can see mold developing so everything is just going to be thrown into the run for them to pick through. Which means I'll have to purchase some for them to pick at when they are cooped up because of the snow.

Taprock- In regards to the sunflower seeds, my neighbor has a bunch in back that are dead and just hanging over. Can I feed them to the chickens and do i just cut the top of the plant and give it to them or do you have to dry em out 1st? Hate to watch good food go to spoil if there's a way to use it.
