Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Raz, I pulled my brussel sprout stalks and stripped the leaves off, can I store them that way someplace cool or should I remove the sprouts from the stalks?
They should be stored in a trash can and set out to the curb...foul, evil nasty little things that they are.

But if you insist on keeping them, you can store them for a few weeks in the fridge. For long term, blanch and freeze them.

Last year I had found a site *someplace* online that talked about situating your coop/house in terms of directionality. Like, the south side of the house should be the rear of the house. (I think that was what the site said anyway bcz that is what I did) Anyway, last week I was looking for that site and could not find it... Any of y'all have a link by chance? I was disappointed last week with the snow, I was seeing a bit of blowing snow making its way into the doorway of one house. My plan to remedy that is to build a straw house opposite a walk way in front of the door. Seems like that's what I did last year anyway.

Rain here too. DH & DS scared up a big buck (they think) yesterday but still we've not brought any home. I did see an interesting webpage on the Michigan.gov site about aging deer by their teeth, with pics, if any of y'all are interested. Seems like there are fewer hunters here than years past, if gunshots are any indication. I'm surprised at those of you not able to get private land doe tags, it must be a county limit. We had no issues here and I bought mine Thurs night.

lady, the roof will be fine. One thing you could have done was take some felt paper and lapped it over the last row of shingles, and cover the part you had left to shingle and let it go past the roof at the top a little, nail it down good. Will hold up better than worrying about tarps and you could continue to shingle over the top of the felt if it was still in good condition. This would have allowed the rain to wash over the shingle instead of behind it. The coop is beautiful, I can't wait to see it finished!

So far the buck I got has been the only deer I've seen. I took today off to rest my back. Wasn't keen on sitting out in the rain either.

Menards has some of their hunting stuff on sale. My dad, sister and I each purchased a new pop blind (6x6) for 37.99. Great for weather like today! I was surprised how big it was, though the quality was reflected in the price for sure. The tent part was ok, but the black out coating that makes it also waterproof, had a lot of bad spots.

For the non hunting folks.. they had nice green seat cushions, great for games and just sitting on for $1.99!

Peeps, welcome to BYC! You got the best advice so far....... always go WAY bigger than you think you need. Only want 8 chickens, plan for a coop that will hold 20! LOL!

Good luck on your test Raz!!

Sam, sounds like the nephew is doing a good job of limiting his time on the planet. If I were your friend, I would not say a word about what I've done. People tend to be vindictive.

Taking the rooster to his new home. He just started crowing and making noises. At first the crowing was cute, now he won't stop lol. :p

It would be funny to stop at Starbucks or somplace and when they give u the change they here the crowing lol.

I like cochins, although the 2 delaware pullets I got from Jake are very friendly too. Astralops are a good layer and a nice bird. I think I would get a few of several different kinds and see what you like best. I'm out to clean my gutters while its still warm.

Totally off the chicken subject.......does anyone know anything about hedgehogs from care to finding one? If so pm me, we are considering one for my son who has been asking for his own indoor pet.

Stay dry, or at least try to.

The flock of 4 seems so much smaller now with Mocha gone. All we have is 2 bantams and 2 LFs now.

Anyone out there selling clean footed bantams? A EE or Polish bantam Is what I am looking for. No roosters please.
