Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

With the Holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving.

As you may know, some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a “social session” out with friends. Well, two days ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly, I still had some sense to know that I might have been slightly over the limit.

That’s when I did something that I’d never done before … I took a cab home.

Sure enough, on the way home there was a police road block. But, since it was a cab, they waved it past. I arrived safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before and I don’t know where I got it … and now that it’s in my garage, I don’t know what to do with it.

Gave me my morning chuckle, thanks
Thanks also for the link to MI live. I usually read the Flint issue and sometimes the Saginaw one, I hadn't noticed that article.

Oh that is so funny! Did you find your car?

My rabbits don't eat the rubber bowls. But, the place mats I have in the nesting boxes, that they like.

My girls don't like anyone messing with their nesting boxes. When I clean them and reline they pull everything out and "decorate" themselves. Must be a girl thing because my boys don't want anything in their boxes other than a toy

An update on the chicken attack. I filed a report with the sheriffs office. The y notified the dog warden. I stopped to talk to the neighbor. He is friends with the dog warden. However, the neighbor keeps his dog crated during the day while he is at work, so he said it wasn't his. I believe him. But, he said when he got home that evening about 5pm the 2 dogs were at his property. This is about 1/4 mile around the corner from us and the farm field behind us is his dads'. There is a creek that runs through both of our properties. The German Sheperd had his chain (about 15 ft) wrapped around and tangle on their rabbit hutches, and he described the "beagle" to a T. Fortunately his rabbits were unharmed. Unfortunately he had to unhook the chain to free up the dog and they 2 dogs took off together and remain loose. He said they must have spent a lot of time at he creek because there were a ton of paw prints and chain tracks there. I called the dog wardens office this morning and am waiting for a call back. The assistant said I should get out all of my receipts and add up everything if and when they catch them and the owners. Also these dogs have been loose before more than once. And the sheperd has been reported as the neighbors before as well, but wasn't his.

As far as the hens go, I found the missing one, dead. Had a bite right in the middle of he spine. Lost 2 more, and it doesn't look good for 2 more. I don't know if one is inactive from cold/injuries or just resting, she moves around ok when I try to care for her, and of course tries to run away from me. The other I am afraid I will have to ask DSO to cull her tonight. She's drinking a little when I give her water and eats a little when I give her food but doesn't move well at all and seems to move less today, don't know if her leg is broke or what.

I have started penicillin shots for the deep wounds. Using Vetricyn and Blu Cote. Since the temps are so low and even with 2 (secured) heat lamps the temp in the coop is hovering between 20° to the freezing mark depending on outside temp, I am reluctant to pour peroxide /water on them for fear of them freezing to death or getting frostbite on the wounds and bare skin. I 'm still not sure about correct technique for giving the shots but I have to try. I looked up on BYC link for giving penicillin injections, very, very helpful. But I lack experience in giving Chickens shots! I will try triple antibiotic tonight. Four of the remaining are moving around well, eating and drinking well too. They are the ones that wiggle and flap the most when doing injection and wound care.

Sorry this is sooo long. I appreciate all the well wishes, thoughts and prayers from all. Thank you for all of your suggestions as well!

Also, last night I had the pleasure of seeing the Toledo Symphony perform in Bryan OH, last night. A very uplifting Christmas performance. DSO's nephew performed a solo on the trombone. And another Northwest Ohio young lady performed a solo opera aria. Normally I'm not an opera fan but she was fantastic. All in all the night was great! Just what I needed!
For those who don't celebrate Christmas...that is ok. I do understand.
So everyone... Have a Happy, Merry, Enjoyable, Safe and Warm Day!!!

And on a funny note...sort of:

On Wednesday afternoon I collected the eggs laid later in the day and pretty much the last of the eggs for a while even though I didn't know at the time. I put them in my basket like it would fill them up even though it was only 5. We have little hills and such on the property and the coop is a little up hill. I Started to walk back to the house. Yep started to slip down the little incline. Fell right on my....OK you get the idea. And I broke every egg!

Too bad not on camera! Ha ha ha!

Another chuckle for ya'll. think I have mentioned that my birds are being total wimps with the TINY bit of snow on ground. Haven't come out in 2 days. So, since I am home working today, went out around 11 & opened pen door. One by one they started venturing out til all were huddled right by the door. Went to grab iPad to snap a pic just as most of them decided to fly to get underneath deck, half had made it by the time I took this, but you can see the one on the right in mid flight en route....a little bit ago they had gotten up the nerve to go into the woods & play in the leaves....tomorrow, doubt they will go anywhere :D
