Hi Trefoil,

No we haven't checked for gapeworm due to she doesn't seem to be "gaping" or making that head movement. I have observed her many times throughout the day and she has this "sometimes" gurgle to her breathing. I do not hear it when she peeps and she otherwise has no swollen eyes, or nose/mouth discharge. Just this rumbling more around the throat area. She is eating and getting around pretty good but her feathers look pretty worse for the wear due to the late molt.

Mystery...we have decided to give just her some medicine for awhile to see what happens and not treat the entire flock at this time. They all get acv every other watering and yogurt treat about every two months.

I just started my laundry room barley fodder growing system Hope the fresh greens will perk them up too.

We are learning as we go ...

BAH! Split pea soup ought to be banned! No offence!

Made fresh duck soup today as one of my boss's 80+ ducks had died of unknown cause this morning. Free meat! Its was very good!

No offense taken. One of my sons would absolutely NOT eat pea soup when we made it. If I tried to make him he'd gag...quite the site at the table, lol. Anyway, I love it. Today is ham and scalloped potatoes, then pea soup with the left over ham/ham bone.

Marian kinda likes Bonnie. Sometimes Marian will charge her, Bonnie runs away. If only she would stand up to her.

How do I get Bonnie to eat oyster shell? I have it out for everyone to get. I'm pretty sure I found a egg yolk, no shell in the coop the other day. She doesn't want to eat the oyster.

I crush up eggs shells & put them in their treats. Other day I made them scrambled eggs with fresh garlic & egg shells with a garnish of fresh apples!

Bigboy's tail is getting pretty..not best pic, but ya get the idea. Blackies's looks very similar (both EEs)

Nothing like taking a shower at home and sleeping all night! No getting up for firewood and generator fill ups! So used to not having lights in the coop I left them on all night. Oops! Rooster started crowing around 4 am.

Hens deliver, it sounds like yours got the wet pox too. That is the kind in the lungs; that sucks. Oddly enough i had a few in the rabbit hutch style coop that got dry pox this year; the ones in the camper coop with the screens and solid sides did not. I wonder what brought that to them? Never had that before; unfortunately it was my show quality porcelain d'uccles. Their combs healed and all but now the girl's comb points are fused together and my boy's comb flops.

Hm. Chicken news; thanks to the warmer temps i was able to get some outside stuff done; rabbits destroyed my 2 year old david austin peach cabbage rose bush. So P.O.'d!!! Climbed up into the jumbo pot and left me with 6 inch twigs with barely any bark left at all. So i trimmed the most damaged parts since they will not survive anyway; now i play the waiting game until spring. And put chickenwire all around it, stuffed it with straw and drug it into the camper coop. Girls are investigating the little corner space behind it for possible nesting area, lol.

Treated two of my rescued hens that apparently started the winter with leg mites, embarrased to say that the legs are worst-case scenario at this point. So since the weather was a tad warmer they both got generous amounts of red-cote up in the scales. Oil is a double edged sword in the cold; it may keep out wet but it makes one feel colder..... so i am fighting a battle of "which is worse" at this point.

I also ivermectin'ed everyone really quickly since my favorite hen has the poops for some reason; everyone has chew marks on their feathers so i am starting with this since they didn't get done in the fall like i had wanted. In the fall i had opted for duramycin in the water for the nasty week when the temps fell drastically right after we got that boat-load of rain; i had just bought the new couple. So i was more concerned with stress and sickness, and at that point (when they were done being medicated) everyone was pooping normal. Dratted hen will NOT let me see her poop, no matter how long i hoover around, lol. So idk if this was the issue, or if she needs to be put back on antibiotics...........

Yesterday and today i worked on changing out the straw too. Warm temps made a nasty mess of the poopy straw; everyone is happily tearing around in there eating seed heads now.

How did you make duck soup? Just boil, debone, and add veggies? Was it similar to chicken soup? What breed of ducks? I have a mating pair of Peking ducks, but more as pets then dinner.... Although I'm not opposed to eating them if they were killed by a predator.

Just an FYI, PekinG duck is a dish made of duck skin and meat. The American Pekin_ duck, no g, is a breed of duck. I had visions of duck skin and meat trying to mate
