Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ok, this is a complete waste of time & exercise in futility. First hour of work clearing path...wasted :he

At least I got the weight off pen & roof....I'm beat, but my snowmobile gear kept me WARM :)

The snow is now piled up completely around the pen, SO, that should help keep the birds warm...

Taking a vaca day was smart. If our Commanding General hadn't decided to close us down "due to weather & safety concerns..", I would not have gone in either (I, too, have a long commute). It is simply not worth it.
Though, I really am itching to get back, I have been on vacation since 20 Dec...;)

I love hearing the weather complaints from someone other than me! I stupidly told my son (homeschooled) that I would give him another day off if the local school closed, never dreaming it would for cold, it did! I took care of birds this morning and didn't find it any colder than last week, but my glasses kept fogging up since I had face protection. We have no new snow so I didn't have to shovel today!

Here is my first attempt with needle felting a rooster, supposed to be a Rosecomb. The feet need improvement.

Today's project is the hand sewing and quilting on the coyote blanket...and I have the whole day with no school thanks to my big mouth!

I hope everyone is staying safe and warm today! It's still 7 degrees here, and we only got around 3 or 4 inches of snow overnight. Hopefully we won't get too much drifting. I put scratch down in all of the coops when I was collecting eggs last night so the birds would have something to do first thing in the morning. I'm not worried about any of the birds other than the chicks because they're essentially in an open-air coop. I did make them a huddle-box last night with a low-wattage light in it so they have a place to warm up if needed.

In exciting egg news, I have ANOTHER new pullet laying! Why is this exciting? Because it's one of my marans! And if their eggs get darker after the initial few while they figure out their "paint" system I'm absolutely thrilled! They most definitely are not breeding-quality, but they will lay lovely dark brown eggs for me and I can put my araucana roo in with them to make olive eggers. I'm thinking that may be my project for this year......sex-linked green egg layers and olive eggers. We'll see though.....I might stay on the look-out for BLRWs again once spring is closer. I'm hoping my 2 wheaton ameraucanas start laying soon, and my olive egger. Really, I'd be thrilled if all of the pullets in that coop would start laying. They're 7 months old for goodness sake!

I adopted a black Ameraucana pullet who is 9 months not laying a single egg. The others from that same batch are not laying either. My friend told me that hers stop over the winter, so it will be spring before I see a blue egg probably! These are supposed to be show quality Ameraucana's. My two EE's have stopped laying too.

sigh...so no green or blue eggs for us.

On a brighter note....here is my grass growing project photos...oh and please do not report me to the authorities hee hee:

Have LOTS of snow here near Lansing...closed the city down, so no work for me but lots of shovelling. DH got his car stuck in drive and the other car is stuck as well...

I'm trying to get her to come out this summer to visit my farm. I'm think some small lovable farm critters will make her visit a good memory
That was very sad, many people came together to look for him, always some negative comments"why would you let a child that age go by himself" and the like but the Flat is rather shallow in most areas, and he fished it often,. thought sere he slipped and bumped his head, and that could have happened to an adult. always so sad when a child is lost, I feel for the family.

Raz, I talked to DH I remembered something about it but didn't know she was still fighting, evidently she requested info under freedom to information act and the city counsel refused to give it to her. I didn't know she was still fighting that battle, Good for her!!

not nice outside, had to take Grandson to work listened to him and took DH's truck worst was blowing snow that created white outs.will head out early to pick him up and stop at TC for feed,
Have a safe day

Because non-chicken people won't understand....it's between a green egg and a normal light brown egg. I'm soooo excited! It's a little ridiculous.

@gladahmae
Congrats on the Marans egg! I a sooo missing mine; both Lela & Maia are molting, so not laying. As is Partridge, so no green, either. My beautiful rainbow of eggs is now just a bunch do different shades of "regular" brown. All,of the people I sell to had never seen anything like a Marans egg & love how they look.

@Candy442
Wow! Your grass project ROCKS!! I have got to try that! Shoveling? Good luck with that. This wind has made me give up!! While my car got "unstuck" yesterday, it is currently buried in snow. I think the truck is supposed to be done today, but there is going to be no way for us to go get it.

Very good chance I will not be able to go to work again tomorrow; and I am pretty sure they will not be shut down again...
