Two chickens died last night and one looks close. Have her inside, wrapped in towel, did blow dryer on low. She is barely moving and won't drink. Help. Kids and I have been crying all morning

I am so afraid of that happening myself. When I am home I run out there all the time checking on them but when I am at work all I can do is worry.

I went out not too long ago to check on everyone and make sure all the heated water buckets were still working. I stupidly made the mistake of only wearing muck boots and took my first step out right into snow up past my knees! And then stupidly decided I didn't care and went out anyway. By the time I got my out of shape butt back in the house I couldn't breathe and got a tad bit of frostbite on my stupid toes. Just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I've learned anything

I'm going to bundle up better and go back out and lock everyone up in the hen house for the day. They won't head out anyway on a day like today and I think I'd rather be safe than sorry. Or try at least.

Back to snowing and blowing outside again. Wonder how much more snow we will get, YIKES!

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I would say that it sounds like you're doing what you can for her....just be careful to not warm her back up too quickly.

Checking in from the GR area. So many people in the weather news comment sections of FB and whatnot are complaining that everyone's making a big deal out of this weather when it is a normal Michigan winter, like they're all tough stuff. Normal or not, that doesn't mean it's not dangerous. Be careful! Arrogance won't save anyone.


Sorry to hear about the chicken fatalities. Any idea what caused it?


Neighbor came over yesterday and plowed our driveway thankfully but there's another 3-4" on top of it. Not sure how much we have total. At least 15" though and expecting about 6" more in the next two days - lake effect.


The winds have picked up and the temp. is dropping. The path carved out of the snowbank is my only route to the barn.


Scratch time. Poor Poppy (on the roost in the background) is molting but she is doing good so far.
Will keep an eye on her though. Her feathers are coming in much faster than the BR's did.

So I broke down and decided to turn the heat lamp on this morning. The way my coop is designed it has a door at the bottom that stays open all the time allowing them to come and go from the coop to the run. Last year we had a couple cold days and I shut that door at night but the next morning it was so stinky in the coop. That door serves as part of the ventilation system. I'm wondering with this cold weather if I should do that again for the next couple days? Any suggestions or opinions? Thanks

My hen house is designed the same way. I have open sophets but really need the open pop door for ventilation also. It is going to get super stinky in there but there is a lot of blowing so hopefully that will help ventilate things. I hate cooping them up but the weather and the wind is horrible.

I just came in from getting trapped in the pen. Funny dang thing now that it's over but not while I was trapped in there! I had to climb the fence to get in and fell into a huge pile of fluffy now. Good landing, so very graceful, hahaha. Then couldn't find a way out! The fence door is blocked so bad that I could not shovel it out, asthma sucks. Anyway, I found a bucket to hop on and another fence to bend to smitherines in order to get my buns out of there. Probably end up on funniest videos. Eeek!

Soooo, I know it's horrible weather out there and the middle of winter but... no one is interested in our lonely young Gold Sebright roo????? I can meet you in town today since I have to run to TSC and the doctor for my son.....?

We got over 16 in of snow. I shoveled the chicken run 3 times yesterday. Of course, it needs it again today. I got a path shoveled out so I can get to the coop. Gave them scratch and water and locked them up. The wind is really kicking in right now, so in I stay!!

Be safe when outdoors. It only takes a few minutes to get frostbite on exposed skin. Above all, stay warm!!
