Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Welcome to all the new people..

I love my australorps and leghorns, my isa they come to me but not as personable as my leghorns, they will jump up on my lap if i go out and sit in the run, and the australorps, well they just sweeties, they jump down from their roost and come out of the coop into the run when i go out to lock them up even when its freezing out.. they are sweethearts. and both breeds are excellent layers and started laying at 4 months..

We are now at 21 weeks of age. Close enough to start thinking about POL. I couldn't find the golf balls so I tossed a couple of ping pong balls in the nest box. The canaries are showing great curiosity about what they might be.

I went out to water the chickens today. Two ladies were sitting in nesting boxes just about ready to lay an egg. So, I decided to wait. Within five minutes, I had literally watched the water freeze before my eyes!

ha ha ha!  so true

*Buy mini roses and curse the weather until i can get them outside into the ground  :)  (They are really really hard to keep alive in the house)  If you are trying to keep them alive buy a few and shake off the dirt, repot in different dirt. You'll lose some, and there will by die back but the ones that live will be ok. They need humidity sometimes too.  The dirt they come in has lots of fertilizer and hormones in it to force the blooms, but they don't really like fertilizer and the strongness of it all kills them.
*Pour over seed and flower catalogs, curse the weather some more.
*Cook goodies and gain back whatever i've managed to lose the last couple months...curse the weather because i can't lose it until i can get out and walk
**********A lot of cursing, LOL

Love it! I have been doing a lot of stomping and muttering anti winter phrases on the way back from the coop each night.

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with the instant freeze trick. You put a pop in the freezer and if you catch it at the perfect temp you can slap it and watch the whole thing turn to ice. Well I have done it with an egg! I took it out of the nest box and bumped it only to have it crack and explode in my hand. I would have loved to have got it on video but it's probably something that would be impossible to do on purpose. Nothing like the science of cold.

Canaries? The small little song birds?

Hi NightOwl, welcome to BYC! And thanks for asking the question of which breeds...I also do not have my chicken yet and am deciding which breeds.

So, without chickens, what does one do on a day off, besides curse this super crappy weather?

Behold...

CROCKPOT CINNAMON PECANS

Practicing this new recipe for my momma, for Valentine's Day. My co-workers are about to enjoy this!

Boom. Also, since I couldn't make dinner solely out of these...

What I think was the best avocado and cheese quesadilla I've ever made in my life. Stay warm!

I don't get it. Last week I finally got around to cleaning the last 100+ garlic bulbs from October (good cloves go in oil, bad ones to compost), and tossed 30-40 whole cloves in the covered run for the girls. Instant feeding frenzy, no cloves left within 5 minutes (23 hens). I made sure to eat eggs for the next 3 days, no off-taste.
The girls loved it, eggs were good.
Why is garlic on a no-no list?
