How is the hen doing that you have inside?

She is getting around great. If it really gets above freezing she will be going out on Wednesday, and if there is no picking she will stay out.
Today I discovered my sons favorite rooster has a swollen toe, not bumble foot so I have no idea what to do for it.

I went for another snowshoe today, I was tired out while the dog ran circles around me. I also cleaned out snow from around all the coops entrances so that hopefully there will be less water build up when it does get warm this week, or should I say IF it gets warm.

Ok. I need coop bedding ideas. My coops are getting pretty bad and I'd like to get them cleaned out while it's warmish this week. Our tsc has no pine shavings and getting them at meijer will cost a LOT. A quick glance at cl tells me that no one has straw listed within 90min of us. I have a 7x6 coop, an 8x10 coop and a 3x8 coop.

Do you have any local farmers, Farm and Home stores or Tractor Supply Stores? Other than pine shavings and straw, for bedding at least I wouldn't know what else to use.

I have heard of people using newspaper shavings, but have heard it's not healthy.

Had another thought maybe try Petsmart or Petco.....for shavings or straw...if you call maybe they can give you some ideas.... IDK

I use bags of sawdust from horse boarding facilities. I found a friend that gets a semi trailer load once a month and he sells me huge 75lb bags for $7 per bag. I only use lil bit so he dont mind selling to me. I only buy 4 or 5 bags a month. I seen saw mills offer it too for cheap so give that a try.

My chickens LOVE saw dust vrs staw or bagged shavings from TSC.

That's a good idea to use sawdust...I never thought of that either. I'll have to try it.

gladahmae, Lots of alternatives but maybe not all reasonably priced. First off, cleaning your coop now is a good idea if you can. I take it you are talking about the floor and not the nesting boxes? Acres CO-OP might have straw if you have one near you. Hay and strw supply is down this year and hard to find. Your best bet is to use wood chip shavings until after spring when stores restock. Call some tree service guys and they will most likely give you them for free!

I have seen wood chips on CL under the Free section. Sometimes a person will advertise to come chop down an old tree for free too.
