seriously have to stop going into TSC, but they had them for 99cents i mean 99 cents and there was only 6 left but you know i had to go in and get that bag of scratch.....okay i am giving up getting any more chicks (except those i hatch my self and maybe a few more meaties) for the next 40 days......

@ivebeenegged , glad you're here. You have almost a year under your belt, so you're hardly a newbie! Nice looking chickens.

I'm making myself a little nuts trying to decide what kind of fertile eggs to try to get once we have a hen showing signs of broodiness. Gurus, I'm turning to you. In order of importance:

I need friendly bantams that deal with being confined all right.
I would like a blue and a buff.
I want a cochin and a something else.
I might like an egg that isn't the light brown and white that we already have.
I would like to get eggs from MI folks (via here or other sites).

We currently have a silkie, a d'uclle, an australorp, and a Wyandotte. Suggestions?

It was a size reference to how little *cough* big the booted bantams are. Their little brown eggs are about the size of a large egg's yolk! They are fun little clowns though. My girl was a good broody last summer. Can't hatch bigger eggs though!

I eat only bantam eggs now as they r the best! My cochins lay a med sized egg so their not too tiny.

I had a mini cochin too, but these d'uccles are so tiny! I thinkvthe only one littler is a serama.

Brennegan, the silkie baby is still getting poopy bottom? She may need probiotics. Some plain yogurt might stop it.

Yes, Amy the ee'ers come in bantam too! Hard to get around here. I've only seen a few at auction...but that would give you the blue. D'uccles are listed as brown but mine looked on the pink side. Idk about any other colored laying minis.... Did you know there is a turkey mini? Comes only in white though. Conservation status, around the size of a standard size chicken

Is anyone going to the MSU classes in Lansing tomorrow? They have two and I am planning on going to both. It will be nice being able to handle my own NPIP testing. I imagine I will already know most of what is covered in the second class, but figured it wouldn't hurt and I might learn something new.

I'm going to be there! Yep, yorkchick, better known around these parts as "who were you again?" I'm registered for the afternoon session, and I am going to try to make it to the pullorum workshop, although I have to drive in to Ann Arbor first to feed and medicate and clean up after five elderly cats I am cat sitting for, then drive into East Lansing by 8:30 to make the class. But I want to try. I'll see you there, Sarah!

Only once, but I've been keeping her trimmed and just daily cleaning just to prevent anything. The first thing I pulled (accidentally) was her belly button -- I felt so badly!

They'll be getting some sort of mixture that goes in their water tomorrow once we clean the coop!

mattsinger, my breeder says the marans are not sexable at birth, but generally after 10 or so days the tail feathers become more prominant on the roo's. Hope that helps.

I would think that with 'pure breed' chicks, rather than BY mixes, prominent combs and tail feathers would tell the tale within a couple weeks.

Do all breed roos tails feather out quicker or just Marans?
