Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Had to share :) This is Prince, our main white cock. He just came out of the bath in this picture....

And this is him almost dry :) It's so funny how much they look like drowned rats and then POOF! LOL He's pretty much ready for the show this weekend!

Raz, do they have Welsummer canaries?
Welsummer are canaries and welsummer parakeets.

Sound it out...it's funnetics.

The weather man is reporting that Howell had 7 1/2 inches of snow. They should have measured it in my yard. I just came in from snow blowing and I didn't encounter anything less than 12 inches and many places it had drifted au to 30.

Wow! Thank you for all of the advice so far.

I should rephrase my original post in that we're not looking for a full time portable coop. We intend on a permanent, fixed coop, probably elevated, nice roosting space and nesting boxes. Would 3 boxes for 8 hens be too many?with a relatively roomy attached run. I would prefer to have walk in access to the run for cleanup, and full access to the inside of the coop for cleaning as well. What is the opinion on slide out or removable trays under the roosting space for easy cleaning?

For the portable run, we are leaning toward something pieced together out of PVC covered with netting that we could move from day to day, the hens could "range" yet still be somewhat protected from predators. There is almost always someone home here, so even though predators attack swiftly, I think we can contain our losses. I hope.

Please keep the advice coming!

Hi everyone!
Planning on getting 8 chicks mid-April, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Wyandottes. Any suggestions for others?
Wendy

Welcome, Wendy! We have a Black Australorp with our Wyandotte and 2 bantams. The Australorp is friendly, a reliable egg layer, and has a beautiful green sheen in the sun.
In the midst of all the chaos i have been going through a long and delicate job hiring process for a company hiring direct ( been a temp at my current place) I am at the final stage and should it go well it will alter my circumstances greatly. Much poker face to hide the stress! So not all sadness.
Fingers crossed for you!

I really need to stop in more often! I've been busy...going back to school again, working and family/livestock keeps me pretty busy.
Nice to see you here! Prince is quite a looker! Good luck in your shows, and hope school is going well.

The kids and I went to the FFH after school pickup. They were well stocked with chicks today. They've had none for about 2 weeks. I almost bent after making eye contact with one specific Easter Egger. Instead, I put her back, wished her luck, and ran. I was planning on waiting to hatch bantam eggs under a broody, but the chicks are so tempting. Clearly, many of you know where I'm at.

My neighbor has decided that her house is too much to keep up with, and has decided to move into a senior living apartment. She has a cat who can't come with her. I told her I'd help try to find a home for him.
Sidney is a 10 year old black cat. He still has his claws, but would come with his scratching tower. He would probably do best in a home w/out kids, as he hides whenever mine visit.
If anyone is interested, please PM me. We are in Grand Rapids.

I have to agree with Urchytil, security is the way to go, then you can enjoy the antics of the wildlife without worrying about your chickens.

OOOH I am so ready for warm, green, I think they used to call it spring. Has anyone tried growing morels using the kits?

Of course they do, where did you think welsummer chickens came from?

I had to go to Saginaw this morning, baaad idea. This morning the roads were slick and visibility was very bad, this afternoon coming home m15 was closed between Richville and Vassar. I got stuck twice in the road after turning off m15, the E W roads are filling in here and visibility was nil. A half hour after I got home the wind stopped and the sun came out.

I wondered why traffic was so light on my road (M15) today!!....the weather was atrocious up until mid afternoon and then the sun came out, I have to say I am just sick of this weather now, when will Spring be here?
