still freaking out. I accidentally cracked one of her "developing" eggs only to discover a bunch of nothing in there. Only way to know is to wait, sigh. This is a bigger bunch of notes than mine even! Advise to other potential hatchers, BUY A BROODY! I've been looking for a silkie hen for a year now, those things always seem to be broody!!!

@fuzzybutt love, I have 2 white silkie hens right now... about 11 mths old & just started laying last month. One of the hens has already gone broody & is still broody. You may HAVE them if you'd like. You'd just need to come get them. We don't have a rooster & haven't been breeding the silkies since last spring. Since the silkies go broody so often we've decided they need to go to make more room in the coop for the productive hens. You're welcome to them just let me know. (Wayland area, Allegan Co.)

I'll think on it; at the moment my only goal is hatching my pet hen's last eggs. Depending how this goes...idk i still have her sis but since the bantam eggs have little kickers the only unfortunate conclusion should the eggs all be non developing ( the other hen's looked the same) is that my roo ain't doing the job correctly. I had planned on hatching a whole batch of her eggs when the weather broke. Wish i had given in sooner.

Happy Saturday Morning To All!
I was just wondering if we could do a roll call of sorts? Just to know where in the great state of Michigan, we are all located We are in Dimondale, Eaton County. Just about 5 minutes south of Lansing For now! LOL We are currently on the hunt for some property as we live just inside the village limits on just about a half acre. I can't WAIT to get more space! LOL I have been momma to fluff butts for just over a year now, and want to add some turkeys and ducks to the mix. LOL

Welcome Dimondale, we are practically neighbors Williamston area here! We have had a flock of 11 pullets and 2 cockerels until three days ago when our new incubator assisted in hatching 13 chicks and they are always so cute to watch. Ditto on the Turkeys, but I hear you get pretty attached to them and they are difficult to send to freezer camp. Not interested in having ducks at all, but I love them!

Went to the fiber expo and got my carders and a beautiful drop spindle. I could have gotten cheaper carders on line, but it was good to talk to someone on the kind of carder I needed for my type of wool. And I splurged and got a nice craftsman made spindle.

and...... my first try at spinning... a little uneven (which I don't mind) and not sure how spun it should be, but I guess thats all part of leaning something new.

Just rounded up the 5 week old chicks and brought them back into the laundry room. Can't believe we are going to go back to the 'teens the next few nights. Oh well, it is making me handle them more.

I'm also a bit green with envy over your new machine. 

May I also suggest that when replanting the forest that you consider a couple of other species to go with the white oaks. Purdue has a nice chart of trees for replacing stands of ash. http://extension.entm.purdue.edu/EAB/content/management/homeowners/replacementtrees.html

Hi! We are in Grand Rapids 'burbs! Just joined here a week or so ago. We have 4 Cochins, 3 silkies, 2 Mille fleur d'uccles.

I boiled down approximately 15 gallons of sap today and wound up with 3 1/2 quarts of finished syrup ETA: not that I'm complaining! I did what I've read, boiled it down, raised the temp to 219°. It's beautiful dark golden and so tasty, rich with the flavors of both maple and vanilla. But the math (40-1) doesn't work out. I've heard it said that MI syrup is thinner than VT syrup. Does this explain my quantities?


I ran out of firewood and didn't even get through half of the sap. I have at least 24 gallons to go and it's still flowing.

Next year I will plan a little better = less trees tapped.

Oh yeah and we're on day 16 of incubating fuzz butts. Just a few more days to go!
