I'm hoping i did this right and it is a link to go to to tell Schutte to protect the small farmer's. Small farmers who raise heritage pigs won their case at court the other day, Yeah. Now Big-Ag is asking the state to appeal the decision so that only Big-Ag can raise pigs. Boo

Good, another win for the small farmer! Bakers Green Acres were the first to fight the law and win... glad to see others follow suit. I hope the farmers who initially caved seek financial compensation for their losses as well.

Don't forget that the Ag Commissioners will be voting on the Site Selection GAAMP on April 28.
The Michigan Farm Bureau, MML, MTA and the City of Detroit are pushing hard to deny the rights of RTFA for people based on an arbitrary zoning designation.

Tried feeding my 6 week old girls spinach, applesauce, banana, and cherrios. The really only went for the cherrios, but maybe it takes a slow introduction? I will pick up some yogurt at the store today -- I've heard that they love that!

Beautiful here on the West Side! 50s and sunny -- feel badly for all of you still with snow! Just tested my soil pH for veggies; time to get planting! : )

Do Mama goats grieve if they lose their young? Also, can you "fake" a birth of a chick and just stick one in during the night? I'm desperate for an EE, but I know we won't be able to get more than one more bird...makes it hard for raising chicks!

So the joyous nature of birth turned to great sadness last night. My goat doe Yoko, who gave me two fantastic kids last year, went into labor. But labor procession stopped, so I had to check what was going on. I immediately knew the kid trying to come was dead, it was very swollen and not twitching. I try and tried and I could not dislodge this kid. Yoko was getting more exhausted and pained, so I called the vet.

In the end, we got the kid out. It was...very underdeveloped. And sadly, the beautiful, normal doeling behind it had died from the stress of the birth. The underdeveloped kid had gotten wedged so badly, even the vet had a hard time getting it out.

Yoko is alive and doped up on pain killers and antibiotics. I guess the only silver living is that I milked her a little last night (because she was so full and I thought it would make her feel better to have that pressure off) so the colostrum has been frozen for future use. She was trying so badly to lick her deceased kids even though she was exhausted and in terrible pain from using a chain to pull the kid.

I'm just glad I still have Yoko. She is my herd queen, smart as a whip, sassy, and always first to the treats. But she was such a great mother and milker, I really looking forward to her kids, too.

Sorry to hear about the lost kids. I don't know how I missed the post but I didn't mean to sound insensitive by ignoring the event. It's very sad.

Mmmm, ground dent corn. I will be making some corn bread tonight to go with our chili that is brewing in the crock pot, to appease my now aching muscles. One must make such labor worth their while. Only one more bowl to grind (out of 3). Me thinks some maple syrup would go nicely with that bread. I'm thinking about growing popcorn this year rather than dent corn. The last time I tried to grow popcorn (at our last property) it didn't set any ears at all. Gauging by the success of the dent corn last year, it should be alright here.

One more. Thanks for the free fertilizer? This is my kitchen garden. The sheep nuggets are "mine". All that straw-like stuff is cow poo (undigested plant material) that's blown in from across the road. I knew it had been blowing into our yard all winter but had no idea to what extent until the snow melted. It's all over our property but easiest to see in the bare garden. That's a lot of poo! It's a good thing that I'm not trying for organic certification. I would never get it.

I got these day old pullets at the mill today, 2 Light Brahma and 2 EE's. I wanted Amberlinks because of the dark eggs, but the hatchery sent SR instead of pullets so I got the LB instead. I have 2 adult LB and I like them so.....
