Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It was a busy weekend here too. Sunday we went to Davison to pick up some scrap wood; still hope to get my coop addition done this fall! A huge thanks to Kristin!!! Hope to see many of you at Fowlfest, and I've got chickens to move on; A trio of (splash?) blue laced red Wyandottes, three buff Plymouth Rock pullets, two[ pairs of Belgian dUccle millie fleurs, and two white Chantecler hens. PM me if there's any interest... Mary

Hello,I was just wondering if I could join the thread? I live in Ohio but we are very close to the Michigan/Ohio line. I grew up in a very small town called Sand Creek which is near Adrian MI. We have a very small flock of 4 hens but are looking to expand. Raising egglayers is all very new and exciting we are definetly loving it!

Sure you can join, we have a few Ohio folk. I know Sand Creek. I helped build a garage/barn for a fellow who needed it for a banty flock.

Thanks guys! It's hard being so close to the line, because then you end up not being close to anyone in your state! I have learned so much from these forums and love that I'm not the only one with so much chicken love!!

I have a fellow coworker that knows that I raise BBW turkeys every year for my freezer. This year she asked me if I would sell her one for Thanksgiving. This is something that I have not done before so was wondering how do you figure out what to charge for a finished/processed turkey? Do you sell it by the pound? What is a reasonable price? I didn't keep track of how much expenses were per bird since I had several diffferent sets of turkeys at multiple times throughout the year! Hoping my fellow Michigan experts can help me out with this!

Zoey- the more the merrier.  If you need a rooster, I just happen to have a few too many.

I would love a rooster but unfortunately the neighbors wouldn't. I have always dreamed of hatching my own eggs but without a rooster that won't be possible at the moment :( But we're planning on moving soon, so hopefully we'll be able to get a rooster after that. Thanks a ton for the offer :)

Hi Zoey, welcome to the Michigan thread :D

I got a turkey from a friend who raised some this year. She figures they each ate a bag of feed, around $15, plus processing costs, plus you should charge them for your work - definitely expensive Thanksgiving feast material.

no need for a roo. Buy hatching eggs. I do a lot with great hatch rates. Many bought from down south too without issues.
