While on my soapbox for winterizing I forgot to mention one thing.
Get a thermometer and hygrometer (humidity) for your coop.That way you are not guessing how cold and damp it is in your coop.

There are some pretty nifty units available that are inexpensive. Some have wireless remotes that you can place in the coop and monitor from the warmth of your living room.

No heat here. Ventilation is very important, and one window in the coop stays at least partly open all year round. I would not give up my heated metal platform- used with metal waterers - for anything,. It is so cold here some days the water freezes very quickly, and as I am at work all day it would be impossible to change the water out multiple times - some days it is dark when I leave, and dark by the time I get home. I never have to worry that they don't have water.

Oh does that mean you have to stay away from people? Friends of mine with cancer are told for two weeks afterwards last treatment they are contagious to others. I wondered if it is true.

Mites are the pits! Permethrin or carbaryl powder, wearing a really good face mask. Treat the coop too. Or Ivermectin on the birds and powder in the coop. Treat all the birds, preferably twice about ten days apart. Mary
