thanks for asking this, all flowering shrubs and trees should be pruned after they flower, spring or fallOff topic here. Hopefully its ok to post.
Any tips or tricks for this task would be great. Mainly trying to get an idea of when to do it in hopes they will still bloom this year.
Thank you
glad this question was asked, I knew if you prune now you will take off this yrs. flowers but I like the idea of pruning out all but a few good branches to get a tree look, and that you shouldnot prune more then 1/3 I have some going kind of wild in the back that I keep trying to tameLilacs should be pruned after they blossom in the spring, nice because you get to enjoy their spring flower. You can remove up to 1/3 of the stems at one time, so it may take you a few years to correct them completely. Most pruning guides tell you to remove the older stems, but I prefer mine to look more like small trees, so I cut them back to 3-5 main stems - like the ones on Mackinac Island
Good information on the Lilacs! Ours need some serious work as do my snowballs. Now I can wait till later this spring. I've never had an issue with my grapes being cut back to the main stem every Jan/Feb. By late spring there are so many new vines and lots of grapes later on.
What I really want to find this year is some local crab apple trees. Maybe 1/2 a dozen to start a turkey habitat on my property.
