Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Brutus is an ok bird but came from from Ideal in 2013 and has white in his tail and wings. He's a very protective watchful guy and has been good with people but I didnt really think anyone would be excited about him.

Thanks. He looks more Asil like than Malay. Either way, both of those breeds are known to be very protective of their flocks.

Hey friends...  Anyone know if Michigan TSCs are still getting their chicks from Townline?  I asked when I was there and they didn't know...(?)

I just picked up two pure white bantam chicks (clean legs, def not silkies)  from there and I can't seem to figure out what they are based on Townlines bantam breeds - I was wondering if they are getting them from somewhere else now.    I couldn't resist the mystery chisks.  lol
Mine buys from TownLine and another one. So yes at least mine does.

Yes, my chickens are that rare breed I'd never heard of called "assorted." I'm never buying chickens like that again. In a couple years when I rotate in fresh layers, I'll be asking to share an order with one of you fine people so I can know what I'm getting. And I saw the mouse! That was an awesome video, thanks.

Winter...needs to...Stop. Yesterday when I got to work the power was out! No power to traffic signals or all the businesses on the main street in the area. Since I live so close, I ran back home to make sure we still had power at our house-thinking of my baby chicks under the heat lamp in the basement. Power hadn't failed, we were fine. But it made me think, what would I have done if power were out? I know they can tolerate some temp fluctuations, like a drive to and from the feed store, but otherwise I'd have had to lock my cats upstairs, crank the gas oven, get all the ladies loaded in their travel box and set them up in front of the oven. And then duck tape some cardboard to the entryway to the living room-there's no door. Sheesh, that would be a hassle. I generally don't believe in generators for my suburban way of life (some people here in the burbs really do wig out at the thought of not having power) but having sweet little chicks that depend on warm temperatures do make me consider borrowing one for the next time I brood.

Sheesh again, now I'm thinking about the upcoming tornado season. Two years ago my neighbors and I all watched a funnel cloud pass right over us. BF and I were preparing for imminent chaos, we'd already locked the cats in the basement. About five years ago one did touch down in my neighborhood. Come spring I will have outdoor chickens to care for. Since I only have 6, I could probably use a dog carrier for them if we had storms coming our way and put them in the basement, too. Or would the coop suffice? It's plywood and 2x4s. It could take a hit, of course it could be destroyed if we were in a tornado's direct path. Even if it was knocked over, they'd probably be fine. Man, I didn't even think about this at all when I decided to get chickens. Not that it would have stopped me-I'm not going to decide against planting a vegetable garden or doing anything else outdoors because a tornado might hit. Having a dog carrier or something else to transport all 6 in the event of an emergency can't hurt. Ahhh, Michigan.

That's my thinking. It takes a lot longer to wait in the ditch for a tow truck than it does to actually get to your destination even at ten miles an hour.
I have the same philosophy on speeding - sit twenty minutes waiting for them to write you a ticket and you've lost the advantage that extra 15 mph got you

Of course that may be just a factor of maturity (okay, middle age). I honestly don't get why people are in such a hurry to do most anything.
It took 3 hrs, silly people.

5 inches of snow here and then the freezing drizzle. The ducks are LOVING it! They would rather play in the rain than sit in snow. This weather is awesome and very soon I'll be tapping trees, boiling sap, and watching my goats give birth. Spring is almost here and I can smell it!!!!!

Shortly after noon I decided that the forecasted rain was going to turn the 4-5 inches of new snow into a substantial mess. Since the stiches are out of my arm are out I decided that if I did everything slowly I could probably run the snow blower. Before I had barely thought about it David had the thing out and running. I did do a little shoveling but he handled everything else. I am a lucky man to have such wonderful sons.
I'm so glad you are healing, but even more happy that your sons are always there to lend a hand. Lots of folks could learn a thing or two from your boys.
