I'm in the boat of it hasn't happened, apparently even flocks with stringent biosecurity measures are vulnerable, keep a healthy flock and hope that nature doesn't decide to take them. Though I do need to designate a pair of shoes for going to feed stores ONLY.

And one day I will be able to tell the young people "Back in my day, I lime whitewashed the coop in the Spring for my girls in the snow. (bleep!) SNOW!"

Yeah I agree, could be a dog or a large hawk. I think it's time to build a tractor run for them.

Maybe it is all of those "feral swine" causing the H5N2 panic.

But seriously, everyone should be practicing good bio-security with their flock. Foot ware for chores that stays separate from go-to-town shoes. Cleaned and sanitized feeders and founts. Fresh water and mould-free feed. Keeping visitors away from your flock, herd or whatever. Common sense things.

I'm working on tweaking my bator a little bit so I can set some eggs today. Just 8...want to test it out, and we only want a small laying flock to start. We plan to get meat birds, but I need to finish the tractor first.

Only 8? What if 5-6 of those hatch out to be roosters? Don't you think you should hatch at least 16, just to make sure?

when is your surgery scheduled for?, did you get someone to care for your critters while in hospital?

young roosters are always good in the freezer.

I believe you will get more input on the hobbies, DIY/self sufficiency or gardening forums on this site. Although most of like to know about more than just chickens.

i will be getting the flow hive...however...the big system that sell for 600 they were backordered for shipment until dec 2015....now they met their quota on that so they are pushing them back til feb 2016...was going to order it but when i seen that they backordered shipment for another couple of months i decided to get a breeding quail cage instead..i figured i had time...
