Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That's not the kind of visitor you want!!! He looks scrawny and hungry.

There were two of those little baby raccoon guys wandering through our yard early evening. They are quite small. Appear to be babies probably no more than 3 or 4 pounds soaking wet. I think their momma has been killed as they were wandering around without an adult. A couple of weeks ago, there was a dead raccoon on the side of the road in our front yard....

We did set out traps and one got trapped when eating, the other stayed out probably seeing what happened and Brett snapped its pic. Brett saw them actually squeeze through the mesh of a standard dog kennel fence, that is how little they are!

They are quite bonded to each other. Not sure what we should do at this point since they are little and no signs of momma

I am thinking we should let them go to let nature take it's course? Or maybe call a rehabber? the DNR?

CS attendees or not, I still have Flemish Giant rabbits for sale and may not take any to CS this year based on the smaller turnout. If you want any there, or in the Muskegon area let me know ASAP by PM or text 231-828-5609. I had a few members back out on ones I was holding. Great breeding stock.

Going to have to remove them some how.

Quote: You can ask the DNR, would be curious as to what they might suggest......but IMO any trapped pest animal should be 'euthanized'.
Relocation can cause death by territorial issues, can spread disease(what I think the DNR will tell you) and puts a potential pest in someone else's backyard.

It's not like they are endangered...and they will eat your chickens, plus they can cause massive damage to houses.
Might depend on what kind of area you live in...in urban areas they have no natural predators and can become overpopulated living off human garbage.
One of the best things about my moving to a very rural area was not so many raccoons and squirrels to wreak havoc on my property.

Watch some videos of adults causing trouble, that'll get you over the 'cute baby' aspect.

Does anyone know what would peck holes in the heads of baby wrens in the nest and then throw them out? We found 2 on the ground and one dangling from the house, while momma was screaming her head off in a nearby tree with the male nowhere to be seen, we suspect sparrow.
I've seen Red Squirrels kill baby robins by biting them and throwing them from the nest.
