Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Does anyone know what to look under to find any restrictions on how many chickens you can have in your city?
where are you? they just banned chickens in urban areas-something like you can't be within 250 ft of another residence or have 15 houses within a quarter mile

Well that's not completely accurate. Many cities and townships allow chickens, with some restrictions. Check with your local zoning board or city managers office. Although I would recommend checking anonymously ;)

I can't believe by chicks turned 16 weeks old yesterday! My question is when should I open up the nestboxes so they can get used to them? I don't want to open them too early and have them sleeping and pooping in them, even though they are considerably lower than the roosts, but I want them to be able to use them should they decide to start laying this early. What to do?

Open 'em up!
Put a fake egg/golf ball in a couple of them.
I recommend leaving one nest without a fake egg, as I had a pullet that did NOT like the fakies at first.
Give them time to check them out, get used to them......and time to train them not to sleep in them, if necessary.

That's what I thought too until I got a slew of friends asking me to take their chickens!!! Here's the article I was referring to:

I think it is terrible but 3 of my friends in different cities have all asked me to take their birds so I think cities and townships are now cracking down now that the summer is coming to an end and birds aren't little tiny chicks anymore.
