I will get pics today before the big snow....but be aware that these chicks cost more than most breeds because there is only an average of 50% hatch rate...size, feathers in the way of the swimmers :) I might have some for Chickenstock if you are going.

Good morning!

I've been thinking about doing some plantings along the outside of my chicken pens, which are made out of 6' high chain link dog kennel panels. I want something that will add some shade and be a partial windbreak for the chickens, definitely be non-toxic to them, and perhaps even provide some food for the chickens, but I'd also like it to buffer some sound for the neighbors if possible. Obviously, it would also have to be hardy in Michigan and preferably somewhat fast growing, but easy to take care of. The soil is quite sandy, already has some shade and mostly faces north. A perennial would be ideal, but I'd also entertain suggestions for annuals. I've thought about chocolate vine or perhaps a vertical garden (cucumbers, peas, tomatoes, etc.), sunflowers, etc.. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Your last comment, I'm not sure if it was directed to me or aart...what is "Chickenstock?

"Chickenstock" is June 10th this summer, a pot-luck party for us crazy chicken people. Fun! There's food, swaps, and sometimes that chicken chasing show as extra entertainment. Look below at the Chickenstock thread to find ours, and sign up. Mary

Your birds are beautiful, Jackie! I might just have to come to Chicken Stock! :)
The light gray, doesn't look Laced, is it splashed, or what is it called?

Yes! Power back on after 3 days, 22 hrs and 19 minutes!! Went to my son's house to stay, who just happened to be leaving for vacation the following day. It was a bummer that I had to travel home, which is 20 minute drive, twice a day to care for my chickens. But, all is well. Spent my time wisely at my son's and painted his living room/eating area while I was there. Looks great. Hope he likes it.
The wind took our trampoline and sent it flying a long way into our neighbor's yard. Came home to find he hauled it back for us. The frame is all bent up. Don't think there's any way to save it. Just bought a new mat for it last summer. Oh well....
Hope all is well with you all. Hope everyone has their power back on and not too much damage done.

I'm so happy, I found 5 baby chicks, all of different colors!

I picked up two (1 Buff O.and 1 Australorp) today, and will get the other 3 tomorrow (they were still wet)

I've been playing with these two chicks for the last few hours, and they already run towards me and climb up on my hand when they hear me calling,
..I was aware of their tame nature but I never expected they'd bond so quickly ...I love them already!
