Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

many of mine are 7 to 9 yrs. old,I don't do to well at the culling . didn't mind doing the meat birds, but what do you do with an old hen.

so I stay away from TSC and take all eggs from the broody hens and tell them to knock it off, we don't need any more chicks.

Glad, sounds like you have a FULL house.:D

I’m gonna have to knock the numbers down to about 30 by the fall. MIL is already planning on taking 5 or so of the chicks, and I’m assuming at least 10 of the chicks in the basement will be cockerels. The rest will go on Craigslist eventually.

It doesn’t help that my 6 and 10 year olds immediately “claimed” the bantam ameraucanas that I was going to sell.

My oldest girls are 8 and trickle down from there. I lost several of my older girls this winter. Winters are tougher on them as they get older.

Raz my experience with pheasants was they love to fight and are great escape artists. Hopefully you like them, I was so excited to get them and even happier when they were gone.

I’ve resisted buying chicks this year because I’m just a chicken snob according to my husband. Really I’ve just picked what I want to hatch and am not going to fall for other fuzzy butts. My husband, the enabler found me Serama hatching eggs that were on my wish list. I had 7 Seramas hatch last week. I’m still looking for calico Cochin hatching eggs and will be hatching some of my own WCB Polish later in the year.

And if anyone is interested in a 10 month old golden Narragansett Tom let me know, he and the local wild boy have been fighting.

I had no trouble perusing the TSC chick bins with no desire to buy even 1.

Haha!! I hear ya!
Maybe I'm repeating myself, but I got a new Incuview and first hatch was 100%.
All 26 of those are going to a local farmette as replacement layers.
Next hatch will be set this weekend with BCM x CCL and some backcrossed OE.

Hatching sounds so fun! I spent way too much time last night looking at eggs and incubators online. I home school my middle child, so it would be a double win. I just have so much going on already.

Had a broody hatch out 4 a couple of weeks ago.
Time to get them integrated into the flock,
so I can use that space for the newest chicks in a month.
Already preparing mentally for slaughtering the extra cockerels.

We're Lenawee county residents, not totally new to the chicken game but not super experienced.

Just picked up 9 chicks a couple days ago, and 4 ducks yesterday. All from TSC.

3 Silver lace, 3 Jersey, 3 banties, and 4 Rouens.

Am interested in getting maybe two more ducks but a different breed? Not sure what though.

I didn't realize that farm animals could potentially become an odd addiction. ;)
