Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We got a couple of inches of snow last night. The bad thing is, our backyard is an ice rink. When we had the sun a few days ago, it melted and refroze. Sure going to be fun doing chores today.

Same here...dog is not liking that crust, goes romping out stops dead still then tiptoes back, must hurt his old feet.
It's why I keep my paths shoveled, I can't walk on that crap either.

We got a few new inches here too......wondering...
Should I try to throw the 2" of snow off the driveway, or let it turn into ice pack?

The commute in this morning was a bit sloppy... wouldn't be so bad if some people wouldn't be driving like an a-hat . We weren't expecting 6" of snow yesterday, I thought we were just getting some flurries and that was it. Surprise, surprise!

We did score some antiques while we were out n about Sunday. Nothing fancy, a small brass lamp, a wall mounted oil lamp holder, a wood yard tool to hang on the wall. Oh... and a silly plastic woodpecker toothpick picker, like the one my grandma had. lol!

We also got the snake house put together after stripping off old paint and re-staining/sealing it on the inside. We couldn't pass this thing up... too pretty and the price was right!

And I finally took delivery of the cage and cleaned up it up for the rats. I got them all settled inside last night. I was going to keep them in the garage, but I think it's a bit chilly for the babies - esp when the OH door gets opened.

I was going to get new hens this year, but I think I'll squeak out one more year with the ones I have, they'll be 3 and are looking healthier than they have since I got them so I hope they'll produce better. I may be interested in some hatching eggs if anyone has some for Chicken stock. Putting the light sensor in the coop has helped, I've been getting 3-5 eggs a day where I was getting zero! It looks like the only one that has suffered from the cold is my Sumatra Roo, his comb got a little frost bit.

No snow over the weekend for me. Just cold. The ground is frozen over with a layer of ice everywhere. Going to the garage or coop is dicey. Even the dogs are having trouble walking on the cleared paths.

The devil dog went to the vet on Friday to be neutered. I picked him up Saturday. The surgery hasn't slowed him down one bit. I'm supposed to keep him calm for 2 weeks. A near impossible task, to be sure.

New hens are pooping out eggs like crazy. I'm looking at 4.5 dozen on the table right now. Where are my customers?

I have one hen that's having trouble dealing with the cold. I even bought a fancy smancy heat lamp. She just sits there all poofed up looking miserable. Took her in to the basement brooder and she was doing great. Put her out after a few days and she was looking miserable again. So, she's inside until the weather warms up Wed or Thurs. Think she likes being spoiled. Getting extra treats, her private dust bath, and being nice and warm.

I swear by giving some Sav-A-Chick electrolytes/vitamins for cold (and heat) stress.
Don't need to mix up a whole gallon either:

When they stop moving for treats I bring them into the garage and give them a dose of SAC, make sure they are eating and drinking, then take them back out after an hour or so.
Saved a few last winter, and gave it to them all this winter(soaked it onto rolled oats so no open liquid)and had no special cases.

Could she be being picked on Chick?

So yesterday at work, one of our managers made the mistake of telling us it was his 50th birthday and he was taking the day off. He he he he.... so, yesterday, we filled his office with 600 balloons. Since I'm facilities, I ran the air compressor to fill a good majority of them. It was a nice diversion from the every day. They added a few "geriatric" items to his office, a walker, old computer tech, (IT department) and posted his photo all over the building with a modified picture with him in white hair. He got a kick out of it and spent a half hr just popping balloons to get to his desk. Oh and they tucked a remote controlled fart machine in there somewhere as well.:lau

And speaking of fart machines............. I used one on my dad and new sister n law several years ago as a joke....well..... either my husband is lying, or the machine went on the fritz and it started working on it's own at 12:30 am last night... woke me up from a sound sleep (and that was after going to bed early for once) needless to say I was out for blood looking for the darn machine. I can take a joke anytime, but don't ever, ever wake me up for it! :tongue
