We joked about could the dog count as a member of the household because then we could do 3, which is what our city allows. Chicken math may mean we eventually move further out from the suburbs to a place that allows for more but right now we love our home and the garden is doing awesome.

One window question: do you close them for the winter? I'm assuming I could leave the top one open since there's a gap between it and the roof so rain/snow won't get in.

Ventilation is essential all year,. In winter, wind protection does matter; you may need to cover a window that's facing the wind and blowing on them while they are roosting.

I will close the coop windows in winter only because I have open eves on the high wall. I will crack open the windows on a nice sunny day.
Ventilation is very much needed in winter. You don't want a build up of ammonia or moisture.

Good morning all, I'm a newbie to chicken keeping but have been here almost a year..I think..chicken math fails me ...I'm from Michigan originally but in Texas now so I hope you don't mind me eve's dropping from time to time...I miss Michigan sometimes especially the fall.

So, if the top window is open and if a window that's close to the garage was open it would be okay in winter? Probably better to put the window on the garage side then instead of on the front of the coop.

I jave no idea of a release date yet. Bad day of coughing with lots of nasty sputum. That's keeping that hole open. And the pain level elavated.

Sorry to hear of the set back. Do they suspect an infection? I know it's a pain (and painful) but don't skip the deep breathing even though it probably makes you cough more. Thoughts are with you.

But you do want air exchange. A buffer around the window can help during the winter.

Right, if you can smell it in your coop, then its building up.
