Keep in mind that all of those creepy crawlers are food for your chickens.

This evening, I moved a couple of straw bales and found blue spotted salamanders underneath. The chickens would have scarfed them up in a New York Minute but I was lucky that the birds weren't near. I picked up those salamanders and move them to a safe spot.

My flock has learned that when I rake or scoop up dirt that lots of edibles are uncovered. From worms to salamanders to toads to snakes or even mouse or chipmunk nests will result in something good to eat. The poultry will follow me any time I have a rake in hand or fire up the tractor.

Never really thought about using them as snacks. When I get my chicks I'll remember that

How does everyone decide which eggs to set, if you just want a few new chicks?

I hatch for olive eggers and don't pay any attention to personality.
'Friendliness' comes more from frequent handling of chicks from day one.

Was HOT out there today...87° in the coop.
Babies first foray into the run, a few have been going in and out all afternoon.
Hope they go in at dusk.
I do not want to wrangle chicks tonight...my arm is killing me from 2nd shot.

4 more came in and out of coop over the afternoon.
They all were inside when I checked at 5pm.....YAY!!!

I go out of my way to get bugs for the chickens. Grubs and wire worms out of the garden soil, and Japanese Beetles from out in the field in the summer. Pest control and free chicken food. Gotta love it!

I have a personal vendetta against Japanese Beetles. They killed my hazelnut trees.

Glad you weren't injured, John. I have no idea about Chickenstock. I did not reserve the pavilion. There was just too much doubt on having it among the folk. Someone mentioned a place in Williamston.

Raining and rather chilly today so no run time for the babies.
Instead we have 'Tiny Door' training.
Will leave this up for a couple-few days, then the real integration begins.

When I get chickens I'd let them go into my garden and eat some of the bugs in there but I don't trust them not to kick everything around
